Minnesota Free-Mo Modelers -- Tips and Tricks

Measuring modules.  Not all modules turn out in real life exactly as they are planned.  Even seemingly minor differences between plans and reality can make a big difference when modules are put together into large layouts.  Curved modules are particularly an issue where it is important to know the precise angles and dimensions.  Gregg Fuhriman from NorCal Free-mo put together a very useful set of instructions for one way to measure modules accurately.  We reproduce it here with his permission.

Track bus wiring.  Perhaps the easiest way to produce accidentally a module that will short out a layout is to mix up the pins on the Jones plugs at the Free-mo ends.  Remember to follow the rule that pin 1 (the large one) on the male plug and slot 2 (the small one) on the female plug should both be connected to the left rail when looking at the module end.  A photo that may come in handy is provided here.  The photo is of Forest Bend, tipped on its side and it was shot and labeled by Bob Sterner.
