I am a student of grandmaster Hee Il Cho, who until recently, lived here (well, 20 minutes away in albuquerque) and taught daily at what was his world headquarters. He has since moved on to Hawaii, but he instilled in his students the importance and vallue of the traditional and spiritual aspects of the art of TKD (as well as a dynamite spinning heel kick!) - I have discovered Martial Arts rather late in life (71) and am a student at US Acadamy of Martial Arts in East Longmeadow, MA. I am a Purple Belt, working on Red and enjoying it very much! Master Han says I am the oldest student he has had.
I wonder what at what age the oldest person has achieved Black Belt status in Tai Kwon Do? I shall be 72, at the latest 73, when I reach that milestone.

One training technique I would add. If you have a pool available. Try doing kicks in the pool. It's a nice balance exercise. Plus you get the extra resistance of having to plough through water.
The best benefit is this will teach you where your feet need to be to throw effective kicks. Give it a try and you'll find out what I mean.

- I'll take all your advice except your side commentary about ballet. In regards to kicks with no power you say "That person would make a better ballet dancer than Taekwondo practitioner." Most ballet moves are NOT pretty like that. They are fast, hard, and much more complicated than you could ever imagine. If you don't believe me go and see the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater the next time they perform in a city near you. Martha Graham called dancers "The athelets of God." - Hasn't TKD only been around since the 50's? I believe so, it was when the Japanese left occupied Korea that the koreans hatched their new art TKD. before the occupation they did a style calle Tae kwon or something like that. It was a soft style much like Thai Chi. The decades of Japanese style karate they were only allowed to practice is much of what tkd is based off of. Check it out, it's in the history. In any event, tkd has not been around for 2000 years. That is propaganda circulated by the koreans.

I just want to say that you have a great site :o) I also have a question if you don't mind answering. I know you live in NC and train in TKD. My boyfriend and I plan on moving down there in a couple of years. I didn't think it hurt to start looking for dojangs now. We both train in TKD up here in NY (I'm a red belt, he's a black belt).
Do you (or your instructors) know of a good dojang in the Wilmington area? TKD of course :o) And it doesn't have to be in the town of Wilmington. We are willing to travel a bit to get there (Hopefully no more than an hour).

- Hi Allison,wow- great site! I just took my 2nd tkd class last night. I'm alot older than you (39) and am pretty overweight. I used to be a serious jock, though, and I think that's helping me out. I have been out of shape for so long and am nursing an arthritic knee, and I have been a little apprehensive about whether or not I could cut it. I think I can, but I've got to watch the knee. The other thing I wanted to say was that I'm a Christian, too, and I was really excited to see another Christian woman out there "kickin' it". - Wow just saying i was very impressed with this site. It is making me think how many different types of taekwondo there are. I have just completed a seminar with master steiner and master fruitstone. As it has probably been described many different times, Taekwondo is like chinese wispers? have you played that game when you were younger? well as it gets passed on through word of mouth, it changes each time? there is a full 15 volume encyclopedia (cant spell that lol oh well) that General Choi Hong Hi wrote, since he is the founder its most probablt right. But who is to say who is right n who is wrong??? since one person has taught you one thing and some1 else had taught you another? sorry im going on now ill stop. again i would just like to say what a informative site!

- What a great site! I'm a 40-yr old woman who has been taking taekwondo since the beginning of June. It's a great workout, but I find myself frustrated and questioning myself often. Your article on overcoming testng jitters was very helpful. I have printed it out and will be re-reading it before I test for my yellow stripe at the end of the month. This is the 3rd year that my 9 yr old daughter has been taking TKD - she will be testing for her green belt soon. It's a great sport for kids to develop self-confidence & discipline.

- Surfing the net for a good Taekwon Do site and I think I've just found the BEST! Very impressed on your outlook on not only Taekwon Do but life in general, it is "The way of Life". Very well written and an excellent inspiration! Myself am currently an ITF Blue Belt training with a local club with my family of five. Taekwon Do has not only made me lose my roundish belly but brought our family alot closer together. Excellent web site! I am a First Dan learning how to run. I train at two places 6 days a week. I can not get enough Taekwon-do! I liked your article about testing. I was always one to get nervous at a test. My Black Belt test was a different story though. For some reason I was very calm. I had a very good test. I actually am looking forward to my 2nd Dan test. I would have to agree with you there, Kathleen. So many people seem to think that ballet is easy, that it's for "wusses".
I belonged to a dance company for seveal years. We did various sorts of dance, but ballet was my favourtie-and the biggest challenge. I would come home after a long day of practice nursing my bloody and blistered feet. Ballet takes strength, flexibility, stamina, and grace.
Remember, us ballarinas feel the same way about our sport as you do yours.
