Frank William Schulte, my paternal grandfather, came to this country with his parents and siblings in 1880 according to the 1900 US Federal Census of Kent Co., MI.

The 1900 census also shows the following:

Birth - April 1873

Age last birthday - 27

Married - 10 months

Occupation - "Woodcarver"

Residence - Renting on First Street (probably from father, Ferdinand)

Year immigrated - 1880

No. of years here - 20 (Kent County?? which could mean they came straight to Kent Co., MI from Germany)

Marriage license shows Frank's birthplace as "Germany/Europe" and his occupation at the time of marriage as "Woodcarver". He married 24-Aug-1899 Frances REICHWEIN, born Grand Rapids, Kent, MI to Michael REICHWEIN and Frances "STIDTGEN" (STUTTGEN). Priest performing marriage was Henry L. Urben, Priest. Witnesses were John Jaeger and Louisa Arnold, both of Kent County.

Certificate of Death shows date of death 04-Dec-1915, age 42 years, 7 months, 10 days, place of death Grand Rapids, Kent, MI, birthplace "Germany/Europe", his occupation at the time of death to be "Carver" and cause of death "Tuberculosis". His parents were listed as Fred SCHULTE and Elizabeth "BACHMANN" (BRUCHMANN), both of Germany/Europe.

Prior to his death on 04-Dec-1915 his doctor told him to get an outdoor job for his health. He then became caretaker for the John Ball Park Zoo.

His obituary in the 05-Dec-1915 Grand Rapids Herald is as follows:

FRANK W. SCHULTE DIES AT AGE OF 42 YEARS

Frank W. Schulte, 42 years old, a resident of Grand Rapids for the past 40 years, died Saturday at his home, 1019 First Street, N.W. He was a member of the Germania and St. Joseph's Aid Societies. He is survived by a widow and four children, Raphael, Margaret (Marguerite), Raymond (Raymund) and Jerome and a brother and sister. Funeral services will be held at 9:00 o'clock Tuesday morning at Saint James Church.
