WORKLIFE PAGES
...being some chronicles relating to what I do for money in this world...

"I'm the three day man... it's three days too long
everything is in its right place but something is wrong
time is on wheels, my lips shake when you have to
live with every decision you make
but that doesn't mean that I'll be your slave
doesn't mean you're here to stay
doesn't mean we're friends for life"

~ Waterboys ~

for you who care and want to know why there have been so few worklife updates (and no lifetimes so far this year and minimal creative writings or growth in any gardens), this might help a little towards understanding where I have been and why I'm not here (except to lament not being here)... I just set my schedule for the next few weeks and unless they figure out that they don't want to pay that much overtime, I will be reaching the limits I was burning at in 1999 (if that link is even accesible, which is a whole other grumbly story)... anyway, all that said, this is about how worklife breaks down and stacks up so far...

sat 7am-12 midnight (17 hours)
sun 3pm-mon 8am (17 hours)
mon 11pm-tues 4pm (17 hours)
wed 7am-12midnight (17 hours)
fri 7am-4pm (9 hours)

breaking it down further (mostly so I might reassure myself I'll get a little sleep, but for the statistically minded ultra curious and true friends/family out there who really do care and want to know the mundane details), it looks like...

fri 7am-4pm (9 hours)

week begins (easier to view as it looks like I might be able to have all of Thursday off so I start/end this with my day off)... ok, so that'll mean waking at about 5:30AM (5:45AM if I want to rush, 6AM if I want to rush like a madman... don't need the stess just for an extra 30 minutes sleep though) for a shower and a 45 minute drive... I should be semi well rested if I do what's good for me, but I'll be starving for writing time even more than I am now very shortly so who knows... anyway, I should be back to a bed by 6pm the latest, even with rush hour traffic tossed in, unless they ask me to cover until 6PM (which is likely on some days)... still, the possibility of at least 8 hours sleep is good between 9:30pm and 5:30am (if I don't get sucked into some needy situation or get selfish and physically self-destructive in order to write and balance the mental self-destruction and unhealthy madness that comes from not meditating and writing)... so... in the ideal circumstance with very minimal time for me (redundant, huh?... maybe I'm trying to tell myself something?... can I be less subtle?), there is hope for 2 hours time for me, 8 hours sleep...

sat 7am-12 midnight (17 hours)

wake 5:30am... return to a bed about 1AM... add eat and time to care for those living in the space and some writing maybe, sleep by 3AM... that allows for at least 10 hours potential sleep time so maybe some writing time can be found... somewhere along the way I must find laundry time (not wise to continue buying new clothes each week... a-hem)... so... again in the ideal circumstance with, well, you know)... hope for 2 hours for me, 8 hours sleep)...

sun 3pm-mon 8am (17 hours)

depending on time I went to sleep, wake or start at 1:30pm for preparations and drive to work... return to a bed space at about 9am, unless traffic is really bad... if I find time to eat at work (more likely when working night shifts, though a lot more expensive), I can try to slide right into sleep (if the muses and/or other stuff isn't demanding some release)... good chance for up to 12 hours sleep time... sometimes necessary to continue working 17 hour shifts)... so (again)... hope for 4 hours time for me, 8 hours sleep time...

mon 11pm-tues 4pm (17 hours)

depending on time I went to sleep, wake or start at 9:30pm for prep and drive to work... return to bed space about 6PM... I'm usually much more tired working a night to day shift than an evening to night or day to evening shift, so I'll probably fall asleep quickly... but somewhere in here I must make time for downloading mail (which is dependant on access to a phone line, which is usually at odd hours, which usually means cutting into sleep time... and most of the time, life is unusual)... anyway, hope for 3 hours for me and 8 hours sleep...

wed 7am-12midnight (17 hours)

and then, to a bed space by 1AM and off until early Friday morning... so all that said and done, let's see this reassurance in clearer visual terms...

fri work/prep/drive time 5:30am-6pm (11.5 hours)
time before prep for next work: 11.5 hours
likely needs (hours) during off-work time: shop (.5), eat (1), write (2)
likely time left for sleep: 8

sat work/prep/drive time: 5:30am-sun 1am (19.5 hours)
time before prep for next work: 12.5 hours
likely needs (hours) during off-work time: shop (.5), eat (1), write (2)
likely time left for sleep: 9

sun work/prep/drive time: 1:30pm-mon 9am (19.5 hours)
time before prep for next work: 12.5 hours
likely needs (hours) during off-work time: shop (.5), eat (1), write (2)
likely time left for sleep: 9

mon work/prep/drive time: 9:30pm-tues 6pm (20.5 hours)
time before prep for next work: 11.5 hours
likely needs (hours) during off-work time: shop (.5), eat (1), write (2)
likely time left for sleep: 8

wed work/prep/drive time: 5:30am-thurs 1am (19.5 hours)
time before prep for next work: 28.5 hours
likely needs (hours) during off-work time: shop (1), eat (3), write (6), self (6)
likely time left for sleep: 12.5

total work/prep/drive time: 91.5
total shop, eat time: 10
total self/write time: 20
total sleep time: 46.5

anyway, as long as we're dealing in ideal circumstances (and that happens every day, right?), I can possibly get close to the equivalent of 8 hours a night sleep in the week as long as I do nothing but work, eat, and sleep except for 20 hours meditative or writing time for me (prep and drive falls under work and shop falls under eat)... hmmmm, 20 hours a week for me, maybe... actually a few (at least) of the writing time hours would be for downloading and reading mail, not to mention online group administration and uploading time, none of which is my time in the theraputic sense)... so actually writing/self time could easily be cut in half... in the ideal private space (which I don't have today)... and that's hoping the car or body or people or something else doesn't need fixing or additional time (it's likely people will... and that's time that would come out of writing and sleep)... and no time for apartment or roommate hunting at all...

all of this emphasizes (to me, at least) that if I found a place closer to work (near UCF), then I (and the car) would have much more time and much less stress so any help finding a place or a roommate would be of great help...

of course the schedule is subject to (and likely to undergo) modification at any time... and I promised to cover two night shifts in July that isnt included...

so anyway, there's worklife by the numbers...

ultimately, the week now breaks down into four 32 hour days and two 20 hour days and I have one of the 20 hour days off... sorta... anyway, somewhere in all this babbling information you might find you why I've been gone so much (and have no life to write about today, even if I had time to write)... ta-da! J
