"once we were strangers bumping past other lives in a focused fog
now all our stories have melted into two vivid hours
maybe we're better now, stronger, with a deeper soul
and we'll be whole again in a different way
and this time will teach for a new day

hurry up time... speed us away
to the day where the sky doesn't rain with the why and the pain
hurry up sky... carry them home
then carry our eyes to your blue and your calm
and away from that one black cloud"

~ Jen Chapin ~

amazing life, sometimes... especially in stories

ok... so was the paranoia of the McCarthy hearings real?... I mean, did it consume careers and scare people into jumping to death from tall buildings?... were people really in fear of their lives just because they would not publically point loaded fingers without evidence?... and was our government pointing those loaded fingers without evidence or based purely on assuptions and superficial, often brief, associations?... are we willing to believe it really happened?... how about a govenment interning people under armed guard behind barbed wires based soley on their race or religion or beliefs, even when their beliefs and actions truly are peace, love, and do no harm?...

and did a billion people, including your grandparents, look away when a government decided to eliminate millions of people based on their race and/or religion?... did your family, a few generations back, actually own and beat and hang people as if they were animals beneath human?... can you wrap your mind around any of these thoughts as if they really happened in this physical reality?... can you imagine what living in that reality might be like?...

  what if...

this guy put a whole town of believers, that is, people all believing in and willing to die for the same cause and way (a way that harmed no one) on trial just because the towns people did not believe in the way the majority of the country believed?... can we believe a government would use armed force to violate the constitution government is supposed to protect and defend?...

how about a community of students who challenge the government and stood up and shouted about how wrong they thought the government was?... would the government send in police and the army to push around and try to indimidate the students into giving up their beliefs and shut up and go away... would the army actually shoot students because they disagreed with the government?... what do you think?... could that really happen in this country?... today?...

ever?

how about outside the borders of the country?... right now... or, for that matter, to stretch the possibilities of thise query beyond the known to the infinite, beyond the borders of the planet?... what are the universal (or even human) laws of interaction between sentient beings anyway?... rights?...

what is right?

. o O ( did I ever tell you about my childhood in New York? ) O o .

so the motion sickness went away and I found
the people didn't make the world go round
we're all just riders through the storm or calm
secretly trying to do no harm

but we will scratch and claw and fight
for what we think is right alright
and we will destroy what is wrong
or what they say is wrong
just to belong

and every day deep down we cry
for every one who ever had to die
and every night deep down we dream
that life could be as good as it can seem
in the most innocent child's dream

new york city makes martyrs of us all
there are many of them standing tall
sooner or later all towers fall
mountains kneel down under natures call

and we will rally 'round the cause
for what we think is right are laws
and we will destroy what is wrong
or what they say is wrong
just to belong

and every day deep down we cry
for every one who ever had to die
and ever night deep down we dream
that life could be as good as it can seem
in the most innocent child's dream

hollywood paints visions of our lives
we're all shocked when a new story arrives
it's a wonder tradition survives
based on the goals toward which mankind strives

but we will sell souls for success
for what we think is right, I guess
and we will destroy what is wrong
or what they say is wrong
just to belong

and every day deep down we cry
for every one who ever had to die
and every night deep down we dream
that life could be as good as it can seem
in the most innocent child's dream

and try to stay away from the nightmares
try not to believe that no one cares
try not to destroy the thing we share
try to stop poisoning the air
water, ground, hearts that (want to) care
minds that would be aware

love but love only one way
love but love only your kind
love but love the things they say
love them as they take your mind
love but leave the truth behind
then wonder why you can't find
love

and we will scratch and claw and fight
for what we thing is right alright
and we will destroy what is wrong
or what they say is wrong
just to belong

that every day deep down we cry
for every one who ever had to die
and every night deep down we dream
that life could be as good as it can seem
in the most innocent child's dream

influences sometimes combine beautifully for a moment and when that moments lasts long enough to pass it's magic through a message across time and space, it moves along the path from magic toward miracle... please tell the story... parable... tale... angels, faeries, poets, rainbows, promises, passions, fears, foibles, pickles, whatever one or we might choose to believe in... in the end we want to find peace and happiness and security and some sense of being here, real, acknowledged, respected, appreciated, nurtured, loved...

meanwhile, I wandered around the web a bit earlier today... before heading out to get stuffed at the seafood buffet and then watching The Majestic, a movie that you might see influencing the start of this entry, this session, this ramble, perhaps the black cloud, perhaps the dream that blows the cloud away... all the wondrous stories blended and melted into two vivid hours... and as you must realize, once again, the Chapin genius shines on...

  on and on and...

may we all

the rest will flow tomorrow and so on
