the ups and the downs

(luckily I love roller coasters)

the pennant races get more exciting as the last few weeks arrive... well, two of them do... one league is a runaway, with me still sitting on 100 points and the second place team sitting at 80 points... alas, it feels good to win, but it's much more fun to play the game... I continue managing, dropping and adding players and making position changes day to day, which is probably why I stay consistently twenty points ahead... I sppose that is satisfying... but it's more fun to be in a close race, which leads us to the other leagues...

the first league (you may recall the collusion that planted two teams at the top and two at the bottom) is tightening up... I still see moving into second or first as an extreme long shot, but it's fun just closing in and making them sweat a little... two teams are in a first place tie with 68 points and I'm sitting at 63.5 points... it'll take some weird moves by several managers for me to get any closer, but then, I remember several miracle seasons (how about you?) in that other world widely considered the real baseball J

and then there is the close one... in our last episode (imagine appropriate dream sequence mist and music), our hero (that would be me) had slowly crept up from a second place pack of several teams that had hung exchanging positions about ten to twenty points behind for most of the season to tie, then (here is the new news) briefly take a half point lead at 93.5 to 93 (yay!) and then fall back into a tie (well that cnrtainly didn't last long enough, not did it?... suddenly, it's a neck and neck race (careful now, select wisely) J

oh come on, get excited with me... it'll be or little secret J

and then there's football... of course there is not much to report during the week as football is a once a week sport, so the standings remain the same... 0-1-0 and 1-0-0 and 0-1-0 in the three leagues up and running (a fourth league for locals and anybody who'd like to be kind of local is awaiting more players... unfortunately, the idea for the local league came to me way too late to work, I think, but there's always hope)... in the first league I was creamed so if points matter in the end, my 24 points (less than half of the ninth place team) leaves me at a bit of a disadvantage... I dropped some players and added some players and hopefully I'll do better next week, but it's still the weakest of my teams and it'll be a challenge just to win, especially since my QB (Kurt Warner) floudered (for him, at least) and my top RB (Curtis Martin) is doubtful as he was knocked out of the game last week... and then my defense, Pitt, looked sad last week... great, huh... hopefully these things will turn around and I'll at least get competitive...

so what did I do?... dropped Marcus Robinson, Dog Flutie, Jerome Panthon, and Desmond Clark... and I picked Shane Mathews, Quincy Morgan, Corey Bradford, and Randy McMichael... I'll put the two receivers in, but I will leave in Kurt Warner and Ernie Conwell hoping St. Louis lives up to their potential... without that, this team has no chance... hope, remember? J

there's a better chance for my other two teams in the other two leagues this week... in the second league where I won by a narrow 71-68, I did not make any changes... no available players seemed an improvement...

and in the third league (the one on nfl.com where I lost 84-78 last week due mostly to sub par performances by my 'superstars') I dropped no one, but I did put Antowain Smith in and sat Jamal Lewis down for this week... NE seems strong and the rest of my team (except for TE) is pretty much locked in (Dante Culpepper, Randy Moss, Marvin Harrison, Jeff Wilkins, Deuce McAllister, Chicago Defense)... at TE I have Jeremy Shockley and Chad Lewis, rookie and proven... last week I went with rookie and same for this week... we shall see what happens come Monday (isn't it just too exciting?) J

and that's the way it is...
