A genealogist must have the patience of Job; the curiosity of a cat; the stubbornness of a mule; the eyesight of an eagle; be blessed with the luck of the Irish and have the ability and stamina of a camel to go long hours without food or drink." (The Herald, Vol. 18, No. 3 & 4; 1995)

Census Bibliography

by Ruth Skewis for NORCAL-L@rootsweb.com

Joseph and Mary were required to return to Bethlehem to be counted.

In 1086 the first census in the world was taken in England by the Ancient Romans.  These records were kept in the "Doomsday Book".  This is a two volume book - one with 760 pages and the other with 900 pages.

The word Census comes from the Latin censere, meaning - to tax.

In 1449 the first census was taken in Nuremberg, Germany.

In 1669 there was a census of the people of Canada (New France).

In 1749 the Swedish government compiled their first national census.

In 1790 the first modern census was taken in the United States.  This was the first time government employees went out and counted people.  For purposes of taxation and representation in Congress, 3/5th of the number of slaves were added to the total population of free people.  The Federal Government published the first census in a 56 page pamphlet!!!

Every ten years since 1790 the official count of the people has been taken as required by the U.S. Constitution.  It is taken in the years ending in a zero.  (Great Britain takes a census every ten years in the years ending with a one.)

In 1850, US census takers began writing down the names of all people in the country.  For the first time, they classified the population according to age, sex, race and place of birth.

All the original census schedules except those of the census of 1890 have been bound in volumes.  These volumes of census schedules are preserved in the Bureau of Census files.

In addition to the US National Census there are state census.  California had only one State Census.  That was taken in 1852....

As of 1999 federal population schedules are publicly available for 1790 through 1920.  The 1890 federal census is available, but the original schedules were largely destroyed, with only scattered pages surviving for a small number of localities and showing just a few thousand residents. These schedules have been microfilmed by the National Archives and are widely available.

We have Mr. William Martin to thank for this incredible list of the resources at the LDS Family History Centers on Vermont materials.  Please consider submitting a list you might have put together for your own research.  It would be such a tremendous help.
