Scrappy 9-Patch with Heart Appliques Quilt

In-Progress November 6, 2005

A queen-sized quilt began shortly after Hurricane Katrina devasted the southern United States coastline. There are sixty 9-patch blocks made by members of Quilts From Cornerstone. I used some of the fabrics in the 9-patch blocks to applique hearts onto a black print to alternate with the 9-patch blocks. Since my applique rate was about 8 hearts an hour, after fusing the hearts to the black fabric, I decided to leave some of the black squares plain. Size: 90 in. by 104 in. approx.

The picture shows the quilt basted with over 700 safety pins and ready to machine quilt. Unfortunately, the only way I could get a picture was to lay the quilt on the floor and climb on a chair, so it's not a very good picture.

Knit Shrug

Finished November 5, 2005

Knitted shrug made from the Elegant Shoulderette Shrug pattern by Leef Bloomenstiel that I originally found on knitting.about.com. I made the shrug with Bernat denim style yarn. The color is called Indigo, which is a dark navy and white combination. The shrug was a birthday gift to my friend, who reluctantly modeled it so I could take pictures. I promised I wouldn't show her face on my web site. (I hate having my picture taken also.)

Rust/Navy Big Star Quilt

Finished Oct. 9, 2005

Quilt is a large 8-pointed star made in rust and navy. It is backed with plaid flannel. Size: 50 in. by 50 in. approx.

This quilt was made by the Quilts From Cornerstone group and I did the quilting. The quilting in the center of the quilt is very geometric, echoing the lines of the star. I used a chalk pencil to mark guidelines for the quilting.

I ditch quilted the narrow border and the lines through the center of the star extend to the edge of the quilt. Then I did a looping free-motion quilt design on both borders. You can see the border quilting better from the back (the picture with the navy/tan flannel).
