Livin' the High Life!
Tom writes: "N6712V is based at Meadowlake Airport (00V), just outside of Colorado Springs, elevation 6874', along with 5 other Vikings. In May of 1999, Laurie and I flew our Cherokee down to Miller's in Plainview, TX to "LOOK" at a couple of Vikings. My only experience with the Viking was ferrying one for a fixed base operator that I worked for about 20 years earlier and Laurie had not flown one at all. On the test flight right after take off, I looked at Laurie in the rear seat, and by the grin on her face knew we weren't going home in the Cherokee."
"In the past three years, we have not gotten to fly her as much as we'd like because of my job. Living in Colorado and working in Phoenix takes a toll on our free time. Still hard to believe how great of a value the Viking is - you can't come close to it with anything else. But I guess I'm preaching to the choir here."
"N6712V is equipped with a UPS Technologies SL-60 gps/com and 360 moving map, KX-155 nav/com with KI-209 indicator with glideslope, KN-64 DME, Century II autopilot and soft com 4 place intercom. It also is plumbed for oxygen, but we do not have a bottle installed as most of our flying has been to the east of Colorado Springs. TT is about 2300, with 1150 since factory remfg engine, 320 STOH."
"Our plans for upgrading 12V are to get the SL60 GPS enroute IFR certification done, and install a second VOR (not really needed with the GPS, but it might be nice if we are going do much IFR flying). Laurie and I are both ham radio operators and use a picture of 12V on our QSL (contact confirmation) cards which you can see below. That's about all I can say about our Viking, other than to reiterate that after three years I still can't believe we could get that much airplane for so little money."
