Operation Noelle

UPDATE
Noelle was with Dale for only two short months. On September 6, 2005 I received the following email from Dale:

I'm sorry to tell you but I let Noelle go early this morning. Yesterday I found her unable to walk. At first her right front paw was stiff and distorted. Rushed her to ER. Within a couple hours she was completely unable to even sit up. She was throwing blood clots and in the night at ER she had grand mal seizures followed by continual mini-seizures. She was unconscious, having difficulty breathing (even in the oxygen area), laying on her side, and the prognosis wasn't good. Obviously she had a heart problem and I didn't get her in for an echo on it. I was focused on the neuropathy and diabetes which was coming along well.

She gave me 2 gifts Monday. A pre-shot of 223. And at one point I'd gone in the bedroom and she came out from under the dresser and sat and meowed at me. I believe she had a smile on her face. I remember laughing cause I saw a smile. I'll carry that sweet memory of her.

Thank you Bob for bringing her to me and Sherri for your offer to help with the transport. Not sure why she wasn't with me longer...probably the same question a mother has when her infant child dies minutes after it's birth...but I loved her and hoped to give her a good, long life.

I know my mother, who died in July, was there to greet her and many angels sent by the fdmb community were there to carry her over.

Dale

I would like to explain about Dale's saying "she came out from under the dresser and sat and meowed at me." - Dale was keeping Noelle in the bedroom because Noelle was a shy, but very lovable, cat who had never been around other cats or, for that matter, humans.

Noelle was slowly accepting Dale and Noelle's coming out from under the dresser and meowing at Dale was a giant leap forward. Dale had been having to coax her out from her spot under the dresser but this day she came out on her own and "talked" to Dale. I suspect Dale felt like a parent whose child had just taken their first step or said their first word.

         Chicago, IL 60614-3625

To: Tulsa, OK

Drivers:

Jon - Chicago to Williamsville, IL
Bob (that's me) - Williamsville, IL to St.Louis, MO - Noelle is to spend the night in St. Louis and then, on Sunday, she and Bob will meet Dale either at Sullivan, MO or Redbud, MO depending upon traffic conditions at a major road construction site north of Rolla, MO
Dale - Sullivan, MO to Tulsa, OK

Scheduled:  Saturday, July 2, 2005 and Sunday, July 3, 2005

Note - The records from the animal hospital spell the name "Noel" not "Noelle" - so it is up to Dale, her new mother, to decide the correct spelling. I will use "Noelle" for now.

Noelle's History
:

Noelle was given up by her owner who has suffered a stroke and can no longer care for Noelle properly. Noelle was given up to the Mid North Animal Hospital in Chicago, IL.

The hospital contacted several rescue groups in Chicago and found Cindy. I'm not sure which group she is with. I am also not sure about how Cindy found Dale in Tulsa, but Dale offered Noelle a home.

Noelle was diagnosed with diabetes in January of 2005 and, from my observations, her diabetes is not yet under good control. She has severe neuropathy but hopefully this will clear up once Dale gets Noelle's BG levels under control. Dale also plans to give her B12 Methylcobalamin which the Feline Diabetes community has learned helps reverse the effects of diabetic neuropathy. Laurie, Jasper(GA)'s mom was the first to discover the use of B12 Methylcobalamin for diabetic cats. Jasper(GA)'s web site is at http://laurieulrich.com/jasper

Noelle's Trip to her new Home:

Jon picked Noelle up at the animal hospital in Chicago, but they got a late start. Instead of getting on the road at 8:00 AM, they got started at approximately 9:00 AM.

Due to this delay, the meeting point for Jon and Bob was moved from Williamsville, IL to Bloomington, IL, about 65 miles further north.

Bob was on the road, headed back to St. Louis, at approximately noon and reached the Mississippi River at approximately 2:200 PM (contrary to Bob's normal policy of strictly observing the speed limit, which was 65 mph, Bob and Noelle did about 70 mph back to St. Louis)

Bob and Noelle then picked up Bob's wife, Sharon, and took her to airport - she was visiting her sister over the weekend - this was the reason that Bob "pushed" it a bit getting back to St. Louis. He had to get Sharon to the airport on time.

Bob and Noelle arrived at Bob and Sharon's home at approximately 3:45 pm

Elliot, Murphy, and Felix (three of Bob and Sharon's furry children) were quite put out when Bob had them leave the bedroom so that Noelle could have it to herself.

Noelle hid under a chest of drawers most of the night, venturing out once or twice to eat and use the litter pan.

Dale called Bob Sunday morning to tell him which of two possible meeting points would be used - it was to be Sullivan, MO. Bob and Noelle got on the road to Sullivan, MO right at 10:00 AM and arrived a bit after 11:00 AM.

Noelle traveled the last 8 miles or so on Bob's lap, getting her head rubbed and scratched.

When they arrived in Sullivan and meet Dale, Noelle initially showed a bit of panic at the sight of yet another new person but she settled down once she was moved to the large "crate" in the back of Dale's station wagon.

Noelle and her new mom left for Tulsa at approximately 11:20 AM as Bob waved good-bye.

It is now 3:00 PM Sunday and Noelle and Dale are still on the road home.

I'll update this page when I hear from Dale.

Here are three photos I took of Noelle in the "crate" in the back of Dale's station wagon. Click on them to see a larger version.

She was a tad upset with the vehicle change.

She is a pretty girl
