Operation Speedy
Michigan to Dallas, Texas (with stopover in Grand Rapids, MI)
January 20  - January 27, 2001
Speedy is a diabetic cat whose owner had decided that it would be better (better for whom??) to have Speedy killed, ah, well, I doubt they said "killed". They probably said "put to sleep" or one of the other politically correct phrases for "killed."

Hope learned of his plight and searched for a home for him. Patricia in Dallas said that they would adopt him. Hope then contacted me to see if the STS could get Speedy to Dallas.

I sent out messages to those along the possible routes and Kay responded that she could get him from Hope, in the Detroit area, and take him home with her to Grand Rapids. She agreed to board him until we could finalize plans to get him down to Dallas.

On Sunday, January 20th, Hope picked up Speedy and met Kay who then took him home Grand Rapids. The photos below were taken by Hope.

I believe Kay took some photos of Speedy during his week's stay with her. When we get them scanned, I'll add them to the site.

On Saturday, January 26, 2001, Kay drove down to Kankakee, IL with Speedy and I met them there and brought Speedy back to St. Louis. He spent the night in our luxurious guest room (okay, so it's the back room I use as an office and Sharon uses as sewing room, but it has a sofa :-)

The next morning, Speedy and I left around 7:45 AM and drove down to Tulsa, OK to meet Patricia and Robert.

Speedy slept most of the way to Tulsa. I let him out of his carrier for a while and he wound up laying in my lap as we trucked down I-44. I have to tell you, I did consider simply turning around and coming home and adding Speedy to our family. But, we are at out limit right now and as adorable as he is, well, I continued on and we arrived in Tulsa about 1:45 PM

Patricia and Robert arrived a bit after 2:00 PM. We moved all Speedy's things to their car and then we talked for about two hours and then they headed West on I-44 for home and I headed east on I-44 for St. Louis.

Patricia reports that Speedy spent a great deal of Sunday night exploring Rebecca's room (Rebecca is Patricia and Robert's daughter). He had slept so much on the road Sunday that he did need to sleep much Sunday night.

His BG was 386 and Patricia gave him 2 1/2 units of Ultralente. Considering that I did not give him any insulin Sunday morning and he did not get any Sunday night, that 386 Monday morning was quite good.

Patricia will be testing him and hunting for the optimal dose for him. I'm sure he'll do well in Dallas.

I took some photos on the trip to Tulsa and I'll get them processed and posted here in the next couple of days.
