More Journeyman Snapshots - Page #2!
Hello Alumni!
Here on this page are some more Journeyman yearbook
photos through
the past three decades at Mendham High School.
These photos run from the 1970's to
present day, showing all sorts
of random things about school life that alumni may remember, or maybe not!
I admit some photos are silly (kids I used to babysit helped me pick them out, so
blame them!), but hey, why not! The photos are grouped roughly by theme, with
a caption revealing which yearbook it was from. The themes here include photos dealing
such intense issues as The Grove, antiquated technology, ugly things in the Biology room, poorly solved math equations, yearbook sponsors, school plays, and smelly feet!
There are even more old Journeyman photos on this page
here. So enjoy the journey
through time in Mendham!

Starting off this page is a look at the school grounds where
we used to hang out. The grounds have changed and evolved many times over the decades.
But hopefully some of this will look familiar!
This is the stairs that led from the Circle along the building and down the hill. It's still there, but surrounded by newer construction and looks quite different

Here is the original Grove!! Complete with benches, picnic table, and some Grovers, too! Let's hang out!

Well, check this out! This is also part of the original Grove. What's missing here? The Auxillary Gym!

Can't escape looking at the school from the football field

Remember when they used to etch the year into the hill by the football field? In this photo, the Class of 1985 actually uses themselves to stand on the number of "1985"
Journeyman 1985
Though not inherently obvious, the Class of 1988 uses themselves to spell out "1988". They will try Pi next!

Anyone remember that the trashcans were tri-colored? This is the actual trash can from The Grove! Now who dented it, want to confess?

Here are the cows at the farm next door. Please don't hit them with golf balls! And Minutemen, leave them alone during practice, OK?

And now, the most shocking photo ever! This is the forlorn little sign hanging nowadays in the Grove/Smoking Lounge. Times have changed!

Through the many years at school, technology was always changing. Mendham tries to keep
up with the times! Stuff
we used in the 70's and 80's must look pretty primitive now! Here are
some yearbook photos of thing we used at school ....
Remember using pay phones? I remember one in front of the school; some in the lobby; one by the side entrance; and one by the Auxiliary Gym. Nowadays, every kid has the newest cell phone!
Journeyman 1975
Terrible photo, but remember there used to be phones in most rooms? Around 1985 they were replaced with an intercom system; not sure what's there now
Journeyman 1974
I see a manual pencil sharpner in this photo - anyone still use those?
Journeyman 1975
I think this is some machine in the wood or metal shops? As you could guess, those courses don't exist anymore
Journeyman 1975
Now in 1985, computers are getting more common at school. Think this monitor has color?
Journeyman 1985
Hey! Here is a Radio Shack TSR-80! State of the art with two 5-inch disk drives!
Journeyman 1986
Anyone remember the student-run "radio station" that played music in the cafeteria? I think this is some of the equipment they used - and note the record player there!
1985
We all had one of these back then! A walkman! This photo was captioned "Illegal Substance" - now pathetic relic! Nowadays, every single kid has the newest ipod, of course!
1986
Here's an old projector! Gosh, watching a movie in class was always a great way to kill time until the bell rang! Remember the slide shows, too?
Journeyman 1987
Here is some machine. Not sure what it's for, but it must be important to make the yearbook
Journeyman 1988
Now in 1990, computers are changing. No more TSR-80s! Maybe they are using 3 inch disks, too!
1990
And now computers are getting more modern. Wonder if they got wireless yet?

And now, coming to you from Biology Room 205, here are some old science-related yearbook photos ...
Look! It's the ugly skeleton in the Biology room!
Journeyman 1975
Look! It's the ugly skeleton in the Biology room! Again! I believe it's teaching the class, too
Journeyman 1976

Look! It's the ugly skeleton in the Biology room! (It appeared twice in the 1976 yearbook! Ewww!)
Journeyman 1976
Look! It's the ugly skeleton in the Biology room ... we can't rid ourselves of it!
Journeyman 1987

Look! It's the ugly skeleton in the Biology room! I believe it has tenure
Journeyman 1990
Look! The skeleton is still there! We will never escape it! How many times can this thing appear in the yearbooks?
Journeyman 2005
Enough of the ugly skeleton! Here's something happier - remember escaping to the Wicker Basket during school to get lunch? Good news - it's still there in 2007!

And now for a word from our sponsors! In every yearbook, there are always ads from our very generous local businesses!
But are some of them still there, or has the high cost of business in Mendham made them bite the dust?
Here are some local places that may ring a bell, or maybe not ...
Remember Gunther Motors? They were in Mendham for 50 years, but long gone now! There is a Audi dealer on the site today.
Journeyman 1974
In 1976, Bantam Stores were in three convenient locations! Well, not anymore - Mendham's Bantam closed in the early 1990's. A drug store called The Apothecary is there now
Journeyman 1976
Larison's Turkey farm was a landmark in Chester! Today the building still stands, but sadly recently closed for business. Not sure what's next for the farm
Journeyman 1975
Anyone rent a U-haul or buy gas at the BP Station? The gas station on that site ceased to exist around 1988; now there is a bank there in that location
Journeyman 1976
Mendham Bakery was the place to buy cookies! But no longer, as it closed recently in 2006. Whaaa!
Journeyman 1988
In 1990, you can get your slides developed at Mendham Camera! The store is still open today, but the digital age may end it soon

Coming to you from Mathematics Room 215 (the old 216), here are some mathematical memories ....
Here is a math poster defining a trapezoid. Notice the poster shows some creature (a zoid, I assume) who is walking into a trap. I get it!
Journeyman 1974
Remember those compass things with chalk in them, that would draw perfect circles on the black board?
Journeyman 1974
Now this is just plain wrong! And it made the yearbook, too! Math teachers, you got your work cut out for you!!
Journeyman 2005
Hey! Come celebrate Pi Day at MHS! (I have no idea why that person is glowing!) I think Pi day is on March 14th (you know, like 3.14) - Do they eat pie there?
Journeyman 2005
Now even my old brain can tell this quadratic is factored wrong! You got to do better than that to get a sticker on your test!
Journeyman 1999
And an extra pic - everyone must have watched Donald in Mathmagic Land at some point in math class! (Notice the square roots on the trees, ha ha!)
Disney 1959

Through the years at Mendham High, almost every student wanted to drive to campus! In my day, the cool kids
wanted BMWs, Mercedes, convertibles, and Porches. Nowadays most kids all have super-sized SUVs!
Through the years, we students parked all over - in the student lot; in makeshift gravel lots;
on Drake Road; by the Church; and some park down at Kings (old Foodtown), but
we aren't suppose to mention that one!
One constant through the years has been the lack of parking!
Here's someone parked by the loading dock, taking a snooze! (You really aren't suppose to park there nowadays, you know)
Journeyman 1974
Look at all these classic cars in the center parking lot! I see one pickup truck, but not a single SUV! A majority of students and teachers drive large SUVs nowadays
Journeyman 1984
Car parked on the Circle: It says "Class of 84 Rules!"
Journeyman 1984
Whoa! Who drove this giant whale of a car to school?
Journeyman 1988
To park at school, you better have your permit!
Journeyman 1999
Here is the restrictive traffic sign on Drake Road, that annoyed and inconvenienced everyone living east of the school
Journeyman 1999

Anyone ever got a part in a school play? Every year, the school usually performs a play or two!
Here are some through the years ...
One play in 1985 was Grease; the other play was Dracula! (I vant to suck your blood ...)
Journeyman 1985
Anyone remember that little red phone from Nynex Telephone? The variety show in 1988 was called "Reach out and touch someone ..."
Journeyman 1988
1987 put on the play "The Mouse that Roared" - anyone actually enjoy reading that book?
Journeyman 1987
The 1988 play was South Pacific! (Some enchanted evening, when you find your true love ...)
Journeyman 1988
Can't say I know this one - "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie?"
Journeyman 1990
"Into the Woods" is the play for 1999, and it's also being performed in 2007, too!
Journeyman 1999

And now, for a look at our footware over the years at Mendham High. I warn
you in advance, some of it isn't pretty ....!
Here's some untied shoes, something we all probably had at one time or another
Journeyman 1984
Hey look! Preppy shoes! Complete with little Izod aligators!
Journeyman 1984
Here's some badly ripped-up checkered shoes. Did some of us really wear those to school?
Journeyman 1984
Here's some teacher shoes, always in style
Journeyman 1988
Ok, this photo was actually in the math teacher's section! Someone agreed to pose for this???? What a brave soul!
Journeyman 1988
And finally ... TUBE SOCKS!! We all wore these to gym! But we would never admit it now!
Journeyman 1975
And in conclusion, a couple of quotes to sum things up ...
Yes, it sure was!
Journeyman 1999
Those were the days! Well, now that I think about it, I prefer being an adult, since I have some $$$$$ now!

So thank you for having nothing better to do than to read this webpage!
This page is a
work in progress!
Probably more photos to come, as I beg my boss for some time off so I can crawl though some more yearbooks ...!
