(Journeyman yearbook photos of places, things and events from school)

Hey Alumni! Ah, hope you all remember flipping through those Mendham High Journeyman yearbooks! Each one captures that specific year as a student at school. So here on this page are many photos from the pages of the 35-plus-years of Journeyman yearbooks (but don't worry, not your freshman photo or anything!). These photos show bits and pieces of school life that alumni may remember - like the building and grounds, events we attended, the Minutemen football team, food we may have eaten, plus lots more, too! Depending on when you were there, some photos you may recognize, while some will make no sense whatsoever!

The photos are roughly grouped by theme, and some are real silly, but we already scanned them, so might as throw them on here! Each photo is captioned with the yearbook in which it was found. A second page of yearbook photos is here. Well, enjoy the journey through the Journeymans!

Starting things off, here are some old interior photos. Ah, remember the halls, the lobby, the main gym? Most of those places have been renovated and redone, but maybe some places here still may look familiar ...

Here's the original cafeteria! Anyone remember eating lunch, sitting at those tables and yellowish chairs, surrounded by the black and white walls? I sure do!
Journeyman 1974

How many times did we walk down those halls!
Journeyman 1974

Remember hangin' in the lobby? It sure doesn't look much like this anymore, been renovated quite a bit!
Journeyman 1974

Playing with the parachute in gym class was so much fun! Wheeee!
Journeyman 1975

Anyone have Quiet Study when it was on the stage? I remember being there as a freshman!
Journeyman 1976

OK! I admit this photo is badly edited! There were two students in the photo so I cut them out! Tried my best!
Remember being in the lobby, looking through that big window at the students below in gym class?
Journeyman 1984

Here are the old chairs! You were out of luck if you were left-handed!
Journeyman 1984

Here is the statue that was in the library. My old brain is not sure who it is - Maybe it is Dewey?
Journeyman 1987

At the end of every school day, you always had to put the cafeteria chairs on top of the table
Journeyman 1987

Here's the big old globe in the library. I can't remember if you could spin it or not.
Journeyman 1986

In the olden days, all lockers were orange! Orange was a very important color back then!
Journeyman 1986

In the 1990's, the lockers were painted, no more orange! Here are some white lockers
Journeyman 1999

Nowadays, many lockers are painted red. But I am happy to report, the INSIDE of the lockers are still ORANGE!!
Journeyman 2005

If you drove, walked, or took the bus, you probably spent plenty of time in front of the building! Here are some yearbook photos showing the front of the school, the mound, and the circle through the years ...

Here are the infamous orange doors that greeted many of us on every school day!
Journeyman 1987

The farm next to the school is still there to this day! This is how the barn looked many years ago
Journeyman 1975

Here is the entire Class of 1984 on the Circle! (That's Hilltop School way in the background)
Journeyman 1984

The old mound, sign, and flagpole in the middle of the Circle!
Journeyman 1988

Here is the front of the school, right after the new Clock Tower was completed
Journeyman 1993

They even decorated the area in front of the Mendham High Sign!
Journeyman 1998

Another look at the front of the school, with the mound still there
Journeyman 2001

Nowadays, these pretty banners line the driveway! Cool!
2006 Photo

And this is pretty much how it looks today, though the center of the Circle keeps changing!

In every fall season, many students kept an eager eye on how the Minutemen football team was doing! Here are some football photos and memories from over the years ...

I think this is Homecoming 1973! Big party with lots of balloons released into the air! (We didn't care about the dolphins choking on them back then)
Journeyman 1974

Minutemen head on up the hill after a good game! (No Field House back then)
Journeyman 1974

Here's the Minutemen's win-loss schedule from the fall of 1975. 8 wins, 1 loss, and 2 ties! Good season, guys!
Journeyman 1976

The banner for the Bicentennial Homecoming, 1976
Journeyman 1976

Here is some sort of sports mural, don't know much else about it
Journeyman 1976

Here's the Minutemen's wins and losses from the fall of 1985. Well, not one of the better seasons
Journeyman 1986

Here are the wins and loses from the fall of 1986. Not the best season, but not the worst, either
Journeyman 1987

Here's the bleachers for fans of the opposing team. You were never suppose to sit there!!
Journeyman 1988

Here is our side's bleachers down by the football field. The bleachers have been modernized since this photo
Journeyman 1990

Minutemen didn't play too badly in the fall of 1987 - a lot of close games, though!
Journeyman 1988

And here is a recent picture of the football bleachers. Go Minutemen!

I'm sure you all had your favorite teachers, or had some you unfortunately couldn't erase from your memory! Even though I would love to show some groovy teacher photos from the 1970s with their fuzzy afro hairdo's, I can't since my nieces may attend MHS and I don't want them blacklisted or anything! So instead here are some yearbook drawings and other memories involving the esteemed faculty ...

Oh no! Science teacher Kietrys says the Universe is moving towards maximum entrophy! Have we arrived there by now?
Journeyman 1976

Here's Principal Matthews and Mr. Werle! Hmmm, they look a tad sinister, don't they?
Journeyman 1976

Mr. Grossman is a mile ahead. But you can already see the tip of his really long spotted tie!
Journeyman 1985
That's MRS. CRANE!! No way you could forget that!
Bet you know who this is!!
Journeyman 1976

I don't know who this is, but the poor dude has a typewriter! Who uses those anymore?
Journeyman 1976
That's Corona, right?
Here's a really groovy teacher!
Journeyman 1976

That's Corona, right?
Here's Captain Trigonometry, coming to teach us the joy of sines and cosines! (Many thanks to an alumni for identifying this, as I couldn't even hazard a guess ...)
Journeyman 1985

It was FORBIDDEN for a student to ever set foot in that faculty room!
Here's the coke machine from the faculty lunch room by the cafeteria! I can see Dr. Pepper, Diet Coke, and Coca-Cola
Journeyman 1987

And finally, here is the caption under Mrs. Crane's yearbook photo. She SKIED?? Who knew?
Journeyman 1974

Now for a look at food at Mendham High over the three plus decades. Everyone always loved the cafeteria food, didn't we! (Ok, I was kidding there ... really .... it wasn't that bad ... was it?)

The class of 1976 sometimes drank Hi-C from those cans. I remember those! The photo shows Wild Berry; I preferred Etco Cooler!
Journeyman 1976

Here's a lunch from 1985. Not sure what the food is, but I sure recognize that chocolate milk (which usually ran out by 8th period lunch!)
Journeyman 1985

Here's a lunch from 1987. Everyone drank milk back then, didn't they! And we all always cleaned up after ourselves!
Journeyman 1987

According to the book 900 Shows a Year, the teachers weren't allowed to use this coffee pot, only the administration office could. How sad!
The faculty enjoyed their coffee! Here's Principal Grossman's personal coffee pot (complete with a little milk, too!)
Journeyman 1985

We had hotdogs back in 1988! I was there but I don't remember ever eating one!
Journeyman 1988

Here's a lunch! There is a mystery meat, some orange cupcakes, and chocolate milk, of course!
Journeyman 1989

Here is a lunch from 1993. Is that milk or orange juice, not sure! Definitely see some pink lemonade. Yum!
Journeyman 1993

Here in 1999, students are now drinking soda and powerade. Terrible! Where's the milk?
Journeyman 1999

And nowadays, the students can buy soft pretzels!! Lucky!!
Journeyman 2005

And here are a whole bunch of miscellaneous random yearbook photos that I couldn't figure out where else to put them, plus some newer photos, in no particular order. Maybe some of things may still ring a bell ....

Anyone still have their class rings? Sadly I never got one, my parents would never pay!
Journeyman 1974

Inspiration yearbook quote - so how did your future turn out?
Journeyman 1974

Here's a mural advertising a big 50's themed dance in the main gym! Bring back those nostaglic years at the Greaser dance!
Journeyman 1975

Anyone remember being in the Thoreau Society? It's long gone. I can't remember what they did, anyways!
Journeyman 1985

A state of the art textbook - Learn how to program in Basic! I remember taking that class with Mr. Wargacki!
Journeyman 1987

Here's the space shuttle flying right over MHS! Think it really happened?
Journeyman 1998

Picture of the inside cover named "The Road of Life" (there are passengers and there are drivers)
Journeyman 1999

Check mate!
The Chess club rules! Happy to report it still exists to this day!
Journeyman 1999

Nowadays, the school paper is called The Patriot. Where's Pipeline? Where's Espirit? Where's the Underground Gazette? (I assume long gone!)
Journeyman 2005

I have no idea why I took this photo, it was a miserable day
Here's the school enshrouded in a deep, mysterious fog ... Spooky ...
2007 Photo

It says: Dedicated to Angela DeMartino in honor of outstanding service October 1991 - September 2001
Here's some plaque for some principal (DeMartino?) I only vaguely heard of. Well, maybe you know who she was, she was after my time! But lucky her, she gets a nice plaque in the wood chips!
2006 Photo

And here is the bike rack. I am the only one nerdy enough to admit I actually rode a bike to school (Rack is gone now)
2005 Photo

And finally, this one may strike many a memory to the 70's folk! This is a folding garage door, I think on the lower level of the school. Apparently, back in the 1970's, vandalizing ... oops I mean expressing yourself by writing phrases onto the door was a cool thing to do! This door is long gone; I assume it bit the dust when the Auxiliary Gym was built!

Using my trusty magnifying glass, some things written on the door are:

  • "Turk X Convict"

  • "Doors"

  • "BK Nov 21, 75"

  • "King Crimson"

  • "Jeff"

  • "Cream"

  • "Black Sabbath"

  • "Got those Mendham High Blues again yup"

  • "Pink Floyd"

  •
  • "Kiss my Aura, Dora"

  • "Derringer"

  • "Lynard Skynard"

  • "JF Sept 25 1975"

  • "CC was here Sept 25 1975"

  • "Zappa Oct 31"

  • "ZZ Top"

  • And some nice words that start with "F"!

  • From Journeyman 1976

NOTE: If you ever take the quiz found on the bottom of the page at the Class of 1977's website http://www.ritger.com/mhs77/, the answer to Trivia Question #6 (which pretains to this above folding door) is d!!

I am a HUGE collector of Fisher Price Little People sets! Probably because my parents wouldn't buy me many when I was a kid, so now as an adult I am filling that deprivation
