Journeyman Covers Page!

See What Your Old Yearbooks Look Like,
Since You Probably Lost Yours By Now!

Hello to Alumni! The Mendham High School Journeyman yearbooks were the highlight of the end of every school year. Remember all the excitement when the day came to get your copy? And of course, you had to flip through and see how many places your own photo appeared, and if your hair looked good or not! And then you would run all over getting everyone to sign it, even teachers? Those were the days!

So jump ahead to today, and where are your Journeyman yearbooks now? Well, I bet quite a few of us lost them over the years. But for those of us who do have them, chances are they been through heck in our lives since graduation! And if you flip through your yearbooks now, you probably have no clue who the half the people who signed it are - and everyone wrote you were "friends forever", too. And your more boring friends, as well as the teachers who must remain professionally distant, would always sign the yearbooks with "Have a nice summer" (yawn). And trying to decipher our sloppy teenage writing - yikes!

Anyways, go find a #2 pencil and a Scantron test, and complete the following question:

Sorry, you can't actually fill this thing in - my javascript skills aren't that good!
Question #72. What happened to all your Journeyman yearbooks?

A. They are in storage and they smell real bad
B. You abandoned them years ago in your parent's attic or basement
C. Your kids scribbled in them with purple crayon
D. You threw them out in the trash when you were cleaning house after your 3rd move
E. In the lean years after college, you burned your yearbook to keep warm
F. All of the above
G. A and C but not D but maybe B and perhaps E
H. What the heck are Scantron Tests?

Ok, enough of the pop quiz! (we don't want to be reminded too much of those anyways.) Since many of us haven't seen our old yearbooks in a long time, on this webpage are pictures of the covers of the Journeyman yearbooks through the 35 plus years at Mendham High. Now you can remember what yours used to look like, so if you ever stumble upon it in the junk in your attics or basements, you'll recognize it! And each yearbook cover is unique and somewhat represents the time period. Some covers are plain; some are very loyal to the school; some are artistic; and some are just really odd!   When I first started this page in 2006, I only had about half of the yearbooks. Thanks to some very kind alumni out there who emailed covers (and lots of hard work hunting some down by my friend Susan), they are ALL HERE!! Every single yearbook, well except the 2008 one since it's new. But the rest are all present and accounted for!

So below are the yearbooks, along with a description of what I think the cover is about. But I admit, some covers are very strange, baffling, and just downright confusing. What were some of us thinking! Mendham High opened in September of 1970, so the first yearbook is from June of 1971. Enjoy the journey through the Journeymans!

Note to Class of '81: THANK YOU!!! Can't thank you enough for emailing that last missing cover so quickly! :)

1971
Cover Design: Starting things off, here is the very first yearbook of the new Mendham High! And well, it's quite plain and to the point - It says "Journeyman" and 1971, and nothing else! This yearbook is also quite thin in size, since there was no senior class to take nice photos of!
1972
Cover Design: Uh .... this cover is ... freaky!! What the heck is this? I guess it's a face in the Sun, and the face looks sort of mean. What on Earth is this suppose to be? Is this an album cover or something? Does this have significence to Mendham somehow? Well, perhaps we will never know.
1973
Cover Design: The 1973 yearbook has a textured dark blue background. And appearing here for the first time on the cover is a Minuteman, the school's icon and mascot. Written on the cover is "Journeyman 1973". And that's about it!
1974
Cover Design: Here is the 1974 yearbook, and I admit I am quite confused by the cover. Is this a ribbon, a bow? Maybe it's the knot in our stomachs that we all felt sometimes while attending MHS? But someone told me that the ribbon was actually the initials of the yearbook editor? Would would have known!
1975
Cover Design: Here is 1975, and once again I am clueless to the meaning on the cover. What the heck is this? Gears? Some geometric thing? I just don't get it. (Will someone from '75 email me and tell me? Thanks!)
1976
Cover Design: Ok, I know this one! Though it's hard to see, the The Declaration of Independance is written all across the cover! Very patriotic, as it's the Bicentennial of our country this year.
1977
Cover Design: Nice blue cover here! Decorating it is (I think) the silhouette of half a tree (not sure what happened to the other half), and a little acorn, too! Perhaps the acorn fell off that tree. Must be an oak, then!
1978
Cover Design: Awww! This is so cute! Here is a puppy listening to albums on a phonograph! (But I assure you, we all did have normal record players in the 1970's, though!) But perhaps he is listening to "78"s, in honor of the year 1978! Yeah, I bet that's it!
1979
Cover Design: Here is 1979! It's all red, and has three photos done in shadows and contrasts. The pictures all show some happy students laughing and smiling, having a nice time at school. Aw, how sweet!
1980
Cover Design: This cover is easily recognizable to us older folks - here are the orange doors that we all entered every day! This yearbook is also the 10th anniversary of the school, so there's lots of rememberance info inside. Sadly, the orange doors are red/brown nowadays!
1981
Cover Design: 1981 has a dark, classy looking cover. And appearing on the cover for the 1st time is the Mendham High emblem. It's got an anvil, acorns, a feather pen, arrows and a Minuteman. Yep, important stuff to Mendham kids! The emblem also appears on many later yearbooks.
1982
Cover Design: This one is short and to the point. It says 1982 and "Journeyman". It's blue. That's it. Not exactly thought-provoking or inspiring, but it gets the job done.
1983
Cover Design: Well, let's see. This cover is white and red. It has "Journeyman" and 1983 written on it. Yep. That's it! Perhaps they spent too much $$$ building the Auxiliary Gym so there wasn't any funds left for a fancy yearbook cover.
1984
Cover Design: Here in 1984, the cover has a bunch of bright colored lines and the Mendham High emblem. The school emblem looks different here, as it changes in later yearbooks.
1985
Cover Design: This cover shows an unraveling reel of movie film, spread across the cover. Maybe it represents the drama of our teen lives, or how the yearbook tells the storyline of that year! So, are you still preoccupied with 1985?
1986
Cover Design: I like this one! The cover is made to look like a spiral bound notebook with common school sayings on it! Sayings include "Minutemen", "Tender Years", and "Party Tonight!", which sums up the year!
1987
Cover Design: Here's an hourglass with the sands of time passing away. This reminds me of the great philosopher Macdonald Carey, who spoke the thought-provoking words "Like the sands through the Hourglass, so our the Days of our Lives ...."
1988
Cover Design: This is my senior yearbook, and honestly, my class wasn't very exciting here! it shows the Mendham High emblem, with red and blue lines over the cover. Did you know the emblem has four acorns on it? Were acorns important to your high school life?
1989
Cover Design: Here's another cover loyal to the Mendham High emblem, along with some red lines. The emblem is in red and gold. The emblem almost looks like a door knock, though I don't remember any door knocks on the orange doors around the building?
1990
Cover Design: This is Elvis Costello, playing the guitar! I don't remember him being super popular back then, but perhaps he was! I rather it had been Buddy Holly, he was a far more recognizable icon! The Class of 1990 must love their music!
1991
Cover Design: Wow! This is one BIG and BOLD cover! Don't need glasses to read this! This is the 1990-1991 Mendham Journeyman yearbook, and the cover gets that point across loud and clear!
1992
Cover Design:1992 starts a new era in yearbooks. This is the first of many that are very artistic, and shiny, too! This cover shows a painting of the Philosopher Diogenes holding a lantern, with his sheep, as he looks for an honest student. MHS's own art teacher Harry Douglas painted this.
1993
Cover Design: This cover shows Amelia Earhart, someone who really journeyed! This cover was also painted by art teacher Harry Douglas. This cover is based on a famous photo of Amelia.
1994
Cover Design: Like in 1987, it's an hourglass, but this one has more detail to it. There is no sand; inside the hourglass is a reflection of the face of a clock (probably the new clock tower at MHS, I assume!). That's why you see numbers in there! Took me awhile to notice that - very cool!
1995
Cover Design: This one looks like a bulletin board with a mirror showing a reflection of the new Clock Tower, plus a photo of happy students! But if a bulletin board's mirror really reflected the school at that angle, it would be in the middle of the parking lot (and get run over often!).
1996
Cover Design: This one is .. uh ..interesting! It seems to be a cocoon on a branch, and emerging is a very muscular human arm?? I guess the concept of human cocoons was important back then at MHS? Maybe a metamorphosis theme? Hmmmmm ...
1997
Cover Design:This is a tranquil cover. It shows a path wandering by a tree, heading towards the sunrise. Could be a sunset too, I guess? But a sunrise sounds more positive! Maybe the sunset of our high school lives, the sunrise of our adult selves? That's deep, man!
1998
Cover Design: Blast off with Mendham High! Very unique cover, with a very unusual theme - space! It shows the moon (or perhaps a planet), with a space buggy, and a satelite dish to boot! Going to space is quite a journey, maybe the ultimate one!
1999
Cover Design: Deja-vu! Mendham kids must like paths and trees! Here is another tree/path themed cover. It shows a road among the trees - perhaps heading towards the end of the Millennium! The theme to the yearbook is "The Road of Life", and a student (now alumni) painted this - pretty cool honor!
2000
Cover Design: Starting in 2000, the yearbooks change styles. The covers have a more upscale yet simple look, and a profound slogan to inspire us. This one has the emblem in gold on it, and it says "The Journey Begins". (Yeah, the journey to college, starting careers, paying taxes, worrying about health benefits, 401Ks, hiding gray hairs ....)
2001
Cover Design: Continuing the trend started with the 2000 yearbook, this cover is also formal looking. It shows a gold engraving of the front of the school, along with the saying "It's About Time". Yeah, it's about time to graduate and grow up, and get out of there, I guess!
2002
Cover Design: Very oddly, this yearbook is almost a clone of the 2001 cover. It shows a silver engraving of Mendham High, with the saying "A Look Back, A Step Forwards". Perhaps Mrs. Nutt on the yearbook committee got a 2-for-1 special for those 2 years!
2003
Cover Design: This is one of the plainest covers in years, and one of the most brightly colored, too! It shows the emblem in blue on a red background, with the saying "Every Ending is a New Beginning". At least this bright yearbook will be easy to spot in your attic years later. Good thinking, Class of 2003!
2004
Cover Design: The 2004 yearbook looks suspiciously familiar - it appears to be a red-colored clone of the 2000 yearbook! Like many other recent yearbooks, this one has an inspirational quote for us to ponder - "Memories of the past, Dreams of the future".
2005
Cover Design: This cover has a different look from the years before, as it's more artsy. It also is very loyal to the school's icons! It shows the Mendham High Sign, MHS emblem, a "M" for Minutemen, and the Clock Tower too! It says "Hold on to these Moments as they Pass".
2006
Cover Design: This cover returns to the plain upscale look. This cover theme is just really dark, yet simple and somewhat intense to me. The cover has the outline of the clock tower, plus the mystical saying "Echoes of Yesterday". The clock says it's 2:05, which is exactly the same time on the clock on the 2005 yearbook. Coincidence? Interesting!
2007
Cover Design: Following the more recent trend, this yearbook is simple and plain. The cover is baby blue, with a big "M" for Mendham, and has the words "Journeyman" and "2007" overlapping. Strangely, the Class of 2007 didn't put a profound slogan on the cover. Now we have nothing to think about. Oh well!
2008
Coming soon!

So that concludes the 35-plus year journey through time (and apparently space, too) of the West Morris Mendham High School Journeyman yearbooks. I know some of my descriptions are probably totally wrong or badly misinterpreted, as I am just a plain old alumni like most of you with no inside connections to those ultra powerful people on the yearbook commitees. And I admit to being very clueless at times, especially about artsy things! Anyways, if you want to take pity on me and help correct or help identify something, email me at my address listed below! I personally own the 1974, 1975, 1976, 1980 (thanks, Susan!), 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, and 1990 yearbooks, if anyone needs anything looked up!

* A BIG THANKS to members of the Class of 1974, 1979, 1980, 1981, and 1993 for emailing photos of some covers I couldn't get my hands on!

I bet many of us grew up with these Fisher Price toys! I sure did!     Sue Willis (Class of '88) - doing the research and html, with the help of many generous alumni. I'm a local librarian, also member of the Mendham Borough Historical Society, too - trying to preserve some Mendham memories!
