The De-Evolution of The Grove!
|
Read how the Mendham High Grove changed from something into
pretty much nothing!
|
|
|
|
Hello to Anyone Motivated to Read This!
If you went to Mendham High before around 1990ish, the phrase
"The Grove" probably still rings a bell in your memory -
every student knew the Grove, the infamous student hangout on the
back side of the school. Whether you admit to hanging out
there or not, whether you visited everyday or occasionally or never at all,
the Grove was
always a place of interest - you just never knew what was going on
out there! Over the early years at school, the Grove evolved
and changed locations, but the purpose as an outdoor place for
students to chat, hang-out, chill, and socialize was always
constant!
Well, I am sad to report
that nowadays, the Grove has lost all
importance. Yep, from what was the ultimate school hangout
to Mendham High School students for two decades, the Grove has now
changed into something unrecognizable and meaningless, and no longer serves
as a student hang-out area.
Current Mendham High students have no idea what "The Grove" even was!
They have no idea the importance that it once held to so many kids from Mendham and Chester!
So on this page, we tell the long torrid story of
the Grove - where it was, what went on, what happened to it, and some eye-witness
testimonies of life in the Grove, too!
I fully admit this is a work in progress, and somethings listed
here could be flat-out wrong or just completely misconstrued -
But I'm working on it!
This page is roughly divided up
into the following sections:
The Grove: The Very Beginning;
The Grove Must Move (Auxiliary Gym);
A New Location for The Grove;
The Grove in a Book;
A Piece of NJ Legislation;
A New Hangout Emerges;
All That Remains; and
Eye-Witness Testimonies.

The Grove: The Very Beginning (1970's)
|
|
|   |
The Grove's story
starts in the early 1970's. Mendham High
opened it's doors in September 1970, and I believe the Grove
was designated as an official student hangout from nearly
the beginning. It's purpose was for students to get some
fresh air during the school day - to get outside, to socialize,
to relax!
I seen newspaper articles attributing the existence of the
Grove and
other generous student freedoms (like our free periods!)
to Principal Matthews, who
was the first principal of Mendham High.
I read that having an open place like The Grove was even considered
"very liberal" for a high school at that time!
Where was The Grove located?
In the 1970's the Grove was located behind the school, on
the hill sloping downwards from the Circle
towards the Football field. It was a large grassy area with
an actual grove of trees, which is where it got its name. There was also some
benches and picnic tables, too! Back then, smoking was
a more acceptable practice, so an area of The Grove was used
for that purpose, and some other areas were kept non-smoking.
If you are familiar with the current building,
the Auxiliary Gym wasn't built yet, and certainly not all that
new construction!
The area was pretty much open land
with lots of grass, and of course, a grove of trees!
What went on out there?
Only good things! Yes really! Every kid was a model
student and always obeyed the teachers.
Everyone was polite and followed the rules at
all times. The kids just sat on the hill or in the grass,
and studied
and did homework with #2 pencils. Some kids played frisbee.
No one ever got into trouble.
Life in the Grove was orderly, calm, and
educationally productive.
Only Kidding!! So what REALLY went on out in The Grove?
Well, when you have under-supervised teenagers outside by themselves during school hours,
probably anything you can think of was going on!
Though most students did what teens do best - they relaxed,
chatted, gabbed, gossiped, and hung-out with their friends!
Many of the kids in The Grove smoked out there, as it
was permitted on school grounds back then, but there were many
non-smokers hanging in The Grove as well. The Grove was
also known as a place to hide out when cutting class, but
Mrs. Crane would often get out there and chase everyone back!
And some students would etch all sorts of phrases into the
flaking paint on a lower level folding door, but that was cool
(not vandalism, mind you).
So those things were the worst of
it ... really! Nothing else went on out there ...! Really!
So for the first decade
of the school,
from about 1971ish to
1980ish, The Grove was the place to hang out! Whether during
lunch or your free periods, or even after school,
it was a great place to socialize
and enjoy the fresh Mendham air! Though I been told that as the decade
progressed, the freedoms allotted in The Grove were starting
to diminish. Apparently, the teachers who monitored the
Grove (I believe it was called "Grove Patrol") were having
a hard time keeping an eye on the
students out there!
Not sure why, as the students were
behaving themselves at all times, of course!
I believe The Grove held on to it's
hangout status in this location into the early 80's.
Here below
are some photos of the original Grove, from the 1970's:

The Grove was a nice looking place, wasn't it!

After extensive
photo analysis, we discovered that these students are all
reading Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales, as they dutifully
study for a 17.5 page essay test in Crane's English class.

This is the "Butt Can" from The Grove. It's purpose is
self-explanatory. The can
was a wonderful asset, as it helped wipe out litter and kept things fresh and pretty!

The Grove Must Move: Construction of the Auxiliary Gym (1982ish)
|
|
|
|   |
So life in The Grove
continued until around the year 1981/1982, when a decision was
made that would cause big changes! The school district decided that
they needed to expand the high school to accomodate a growing number of students.
This new expansion
involved building a whole new floor over the "Social Studies" Hall, and
also constructing a second gymnasium. Where is this new
gym going to be built? Well, basically right in the Grove!
This new gym (called the Auxiliary Gym) will be built right
off the "Social Studies" Hall on the lower level, not far from
the Main Gym, and right below the front Circle.
This new construction didn't take up the entire area of the
Grove, but it used enough real estate that the administration
decided some changes needed to be made!
|
|
|
   |
Photo on the left:
Here is the very beginning of the new Auxiliary Gym.
Viewing the new construction is the Mendham High principal
named Mr. Ritsema. This picture was taken in the spring of 1982.
This new construction permanently changed the original Grove.
The Auxiliary Gym was named after beloved physical education teacher
Mr. Jim Auxiliary, who left MHS after suffering
damage to his vocal chords from barking commands
for too many years while teaching
freshman square dancing.
The student body was
devastated to lose such the dedicated and gifted educator Mr. Auxiliary.
(But we got over it!)

Here is another photo of the construction of the
Auxiliary Gym. To get your bearings, the metal frame on the
left side of the photo is going to be the
Auxiliary Gym; and the metal framing in the distance on the right
side of the photo is the new hallway (rooms 133-137 or something)
that is being built above the existing lower level
"Social Studies" hall.

|
|
|
 |
A New Location for The Grove (Early 1981-1989ish)
|
|
|
|   |
So with all the new construction
taking up space in the original Grove,
the administration decides that there will be a new location for
the designated outside-area student hangout. The new hangout
will now be located in the grassy area on the other side of the
school, on the side closer to
Franklin Road, and on the same side as the library
(when the library was off the Lobby, it has since been moved).
This general area is near the hall where most Social Studies
classes were held at that time. Even though there was no real
grove of trees in this new location, the new area was also named
"The Grove" anyways! The new Grove's boundaries aren't exactly
clear to me - some students told me the Grove extended all the way up towards the
library (the old one off the lobby, that is!), and some say it
was much closer to the Social Studies Hall. But either way, the new Grove
was located in this general area near the building. This location was
preferred by the administration since it was closer to the building and much smaller in size,
and therefore easier to keep an eye on things out there!
So ... what went on in the New Grove?
The new Grove had more or less the same
purpose as the old Grove. One part was kept as
the designated smoking area, as smoking was
still permitted at this time. And other areas
were for non-smokers
and just to "hang-out". Even though the Grove was definitely
mostly associated with smoking, there certainly were some
non-smokers out there, too (contrary to popular belief!).
But smoking aside, the students also did
what you would expect - chat,
chew the breeze, dunk freshman into trash cans,
you know - normal stuff! I been told that some years, students
were still permitted to hang out in the areas of the original Grove,
but it seems most of the kids were in the new area now.
And I'm sure all those students in the new Grove were doing
educational stuff too, and were
studying and behaving
themselves at all times! Whether they were graphing a parabola for
Corona's algebra 2 class, or reading for Orfe's English class that weird
Kafka's Metamorphosis story about the boy who turns into a giant cockroach,
the kids in the Grove were always being model
students .... really! Sure they were!
|
|
|
   |
Photo on the left:
These tri-colored trash cans were placed around
the school and in The Grove. (I think they were red, white, and blue,
but I'm not sure about that!). But
clearly, The students in the Grove
took good care of the trash cans,
really!
|
       |
Photo on the Right:
The area of the original Grove (down the hill below the
Auxiliary Gym) remains intact. Some years during the 80's, the students were
still allowed to hang out there, but most of the action
was in the "new" area now.
The picnic tables that used to be
there are long gone now. (1984 photo)
|

|
|
|
|
 |
The Grove in a Book (1982ish)
|
|
|
|   |
As you can guess,
The goings-on in The Grove didn't escape the
attention and curiousity of the faculty at Mendham. (Yes, we
know those teachers in rooms 129 to 133 were glancing out
their windows watching "the Grovers" in action!).
One teacher wrote a book about his teaching experiences
at Mendham, and yes, The Grove even gets mentioned there!
Back in the early 80's,
a social studies teacher named Stu Palonsky wrote a book about
his time teaching at Mendham High, called 900 Shows A Year.
(Is it safe yet to mention this book? It's been over 25 years now!).
He even
mentions how the Grove moved from one location to another. Here below
is a direct passage from the book, on page 17 of the soft cover
version. So imagine the scene - It's the year 1982, and it's
Mr. Palonsky's very first day teaching at Mendham. He is walking around
the school grounds, and is coming up
from the athletic fields, towards the location of the new Grove:
|
|
I walked towards the parking lot along the south side of the
building and came upon a strange rectangle of land. It was
demarcated by fifty-five-gallon drums painted green, and white
chalk lines similar to those used on the football field.
There were cigarette butts all over the ground, but no signs
of other litter. A couple, dressed in faded blue denims and
long-sleeve, colored T shirts, sat facing each other
crossed-legged on the ground.
"I guess this is the smoking area," I said inanely,
noticing both of the kids with cigarettes in their hands.
"Yeah, this is the grove. They let us smoke here."
I glanced at this flat expanse of grass and offered the
obvious: "I thought a grove meant something to do with trees."
"The old grove had trees. This is the new grove."
I learned later that the smoking area had been in the grove
of trees directly behind the school, but it had been
considered a distraction to the classes and in the way
of the construction crews, so it was moved to a far side
of the building. Despite the move, the smoking area still
kept it's former name.
|
|
|
|
|
So even in a published book, The Grove was an important
enough place to be mentioned, and mentioned in many different
passages in the book, in fact!
(If you want to read this rather interesting book, the Morris County
Library has a copy, well at least it did last time I checked).
The Grove continued in the new location,
with students doing what students do out there, until around
the year 1989. Then something happened .....
|
|
|
|
 |
A Little Piece of Legislation (1989)
|
|
|
|   |
In 1989, The state of New Jersey
finally came to a big decision. In matters of
public health and in response to a turning wave of opinion,
smoking would no longer be permitted on school premises.
This included students and teachers, too, and I know some weren't happy
about that. The new measure (A-3722) was signed into law
by Governor Thomas Kean on Wednesday June 14 (that's Flag Day,
you know) in 1989. And
schools had 6 months to implement it into action!
So, what did this mean for the Grove?
The Grove's future looks very bleak now!
Now there's no smoking
allowed, and also at this time, there was a basic trend towards less freedoms for
the students. I heard free periods were now restricted (you can't just wander
anywhere anymore), kids needed
hall passes now when out of class,
and the campus basically was not so open like it used to be.
The era of quasi-unsupervised free time at school was coming to an end. If I
understand this right, these factors caused the administration to
decide to revoke the priviledge of using the Grove as a hangout. The
Class of 1989 may have been the last ones to officially hang
out in the Grove. The Grove's heyday has ended.
|
|
|
 |
A New Hangout Emerges ("The Corner" 1989ish to present)
|
|
|
|   |
Now that all New Jersey schools
are legally banned from allowing smoking, and with less student freedoms being
allowed,
what are the
kids going to do for a hangout? Well, common sense
dictates that if the students can't hang out ON the
grounds, then they got to hangout OFF the grounds instead.
And this exactly what appears to have happened - the students
began to congregate on a little patch of sidewalk and grass somewhere between
Drake Road and science teacher Mr. Bullock's parking spot. This area is right close
to school grounds but technically not part of it. And
this area became the new place to gather and socialize.
This little area was basically nothing more than an asphalt
sidewalk,
some grass and dirt, and in
the later days, also a garbage can.
Since this
area was near the corner of Drake Road and the parking lot, I
heard many students call it "The Corner" or some close variation!
What Went on at "The Corner?"
Information is sketchy about "the Corner" (it was after my time),
but it just wasn't the same as the Grove. I get the impression the
students only hung out there after school for a few minutes, then
they scatter. There was no
"during school" outside hangout area anymore. Many would smoke at the Corner.
It's also in a very
public area, so it's much easier to keep an eye on what's happening there!
I seen students there
during school hours, but I bet they probably weren't suppose to be!
The surrounding neighborhood may not have been too happy about the
rise of "the Corner", as a nearby house prompty built a high fence!
But I spoke to alumni who were students
during the early 90's, and the Grove was only something they
heard of in legends from older students or siblings. They never hung out there.
The Grove truly lost it's meaning.
And so that brings us
forwards to current times. The Corner was used as a student
hangout all throughout
the 1990's and into the 2000's, and even to today. The
name "the Grove" has slipped into oblivion, only known to
those sentimental older alumni who still remember, and to some older teachers
who remember with a glint in their eyes (ok, or far more likely
rolling them!).
The future classes of students at Mendham High will only be
able to experience "the Corner", as everything the Grove
represented and stood for is gone.

All That Remains Today
|
|
|
|   |
What is left of The two Groves & The Corner today?
Nowadays, the three locations for The Grove/Corner still
physically exist at the school in some form, but what do they
look like now? How have they changed?
Well, take a look below!
|
|
|
|
 |
    |
The original Grove today:
Yes, believe it or not, this is it! No, I'm not kidding!
This view is probably almost unrecognizable to the students
from the 1970s, and probably quite strange to
anyone
who doesn't live in Mendham at the moment! Even after the Auxiliary
Gym was built in 1982, plus that field house and stairs later,
the rest of The
Grove was still there more or less, with some trees
and open grassy areas. But that all ended abruptly in early 2006,
when a new construction project began. So now a new huge wing
occupies the entire area, plus a new driveway and parking lot too!
All of this ensures the complete and final destruction of the original Grove.
|
|
|
|
|
 |
    |
The "New" Grove today:
The 80's Grove remains pretty much intact, I am happy to report.
The only striking difference is that they put a basketball
court right in the middle of it! Not sure what year that happened, probably early 1990's.
But the area is clean and quiet. I seen sports teams use area,
but it's obviously no real hangout since the grass is in too
good shape! But it is spared from the construction, so it
will remain as is for now.
|
|
|
|
|
 |
    |
The "Corner" today:
The "off-campus" Drake Corner hangout remains. Maybe I am
just imagining things, but it seems that I don't see as many
students hanging here as I did in prior years. Maybe not as
many smoke as in prior years, maybe the tide is turning.
But not much changes
here in The Corner, except they sometimes switch the garbage
cans. They used to have a metal one, and now it's a plastic one.
And those alien-faced concrete things, I have no idea why they are there, not a clue.
Maybe to sit on perhaps?

Grove Eye-Witness Testimonies, Memories, and Thoughts
(Last Updated in April 2008!)
|
|
|
|   |
Below are some alumni memories
relating to student life in the Grove/Corner. I been getting
more, as alumni bravely come forward and reveal what they were
doing out there!
But almost everyone is listed anonymously, just in case! Memories
are listed from oldest to newest. Thank again to all who shared!

 |
  |
Reported by an Anonymous Alumni, Class of 1977:
This alumni remembers the boundaries of the 70's Grove.
He reports that the Grove was that area below the lower doors,
on the front side of the building. It was
the area descending down the hill from the
front entrance circular driveway, towards the football field.
It was a large, vaguely defined area with the gravel driveway
and sheep farm on one border and including the whole slope
of the hill down towards the back of the football field bleachers.
There used to be a couple of very whittled-on picnic tables down
there amongst the trees, not far from the fence of the sheep farm.
He also remembers there was a paved sidewalk-type trail leading down the hill,
cutting the grove roughly in half, which is probably where
the covered green stairs was later built. He also reports that
the area of the "new" Grove was used by kids in his day to smoke,
and it was called the Smoking Lounge. They would huddle under that
little beat-up roof when it was raining!
|
 |
  |
Reported by an Anonymous Alumni, Class of 1977:
This alumni reports that just about everything that could happen,
did happen in the Grove area ...
|
 |
  |
Reported by an Anonymous Alumni, Class of 1981:
I met this alumni from Class of 1981
at the library. I asked her if she
ever hung out in the Grove. Her eyes got real wide, and
she grabbed her 4 year old daughter and hugged her protectively and
said, "The GROVE?? Oh, I would never hang out there!". (True story).
|
 |
  |
Reported by an Anonymous Alumni, Class of 1984:
This alumni remembers sneaking off into the woods around
the Grove (when it was near the library side) to smoke.
Students really weren't suppose to be over there ... shhhh ...!
|
 |
  |
Reported by an Anonymous Alumni, Class of 1985:
This alumni has many great memories of spending time
with his pals in the Grove! He specifically
remembers the Grove being
located behind the (old) library around the 1982-1983 school year.
One game they played on the blacktop was "Butts-Up" - bet
that name brings back memories for many of us!
He also has some
top secret information about the old picnic tables in
the original Grove, but the info cannot be revealed on
a public internet site ....! ;)
|
 |
  |
Reported by an Anonymous Alumni, Class of 1985:
I was chatting with an alumni from 1985.
I was telling her about this website, and how there were
three different locations for the Grove(s)/Corner.
She says, "Yes, I believe you are correct, there were
three Groves. One Grove was for ****** *****, one for
***** *****, and one for ******** *******!"
(Use your imaginations here to fill in the blanks, folks!)
|
 |
  |
Reported by an Anonymous Alumni, Class of 1987:
This alumni recites the following memory:
"It was my sophomore year and it was the 1st really
beautiful week of weather that Spring (1985). This is
when the grove was located behind the library and Mrs.
Nutt's (typing) classroom. Yikes, we learned to type
on typewriters!! Ugh. Anyway........it was a Friday
and everyone was in such a great mood. Someone
brought their "boom box" (remember those!!) out onto
the pavement and cranked some classic rock tunes.
Steve Miller's "Fly Like an Eagle" sticks in my mind
because when it came on everyone, and I mean everyone
from the freshmen to the seniors, started singing
along. Mrs. Nutt had opened the windows earlier and
when I looked inside even the students taking their
typing tests were singing too! Mrs. Nutt, always the
champ, just stood there laughing. I always think of
that day as: Grove - The Musical!" (Such was life in the Grove!)
|
 |
  |
Reported by an Anonymous Alumni, Class of 1987:
This alumni remembers hanging out in the non-smoking area
of the Grove (yes, there were indeed non-smokers out there,
contrary to popular belief!). She and her friends would
keep a blanket in her locker, and get it out at lunchtime so they
could sit and socialize outside in the Grove. Some of her group
were cutting class, but they never got in trouble for some reason!
|
 |
  |
Reported by an Anonymous Alumni, Class of 1988:
This alumni is a proud "grover"! She would hang out there
before school, and during lunch and free periods. She remembers that some of the
scrawnier male students would have their heads dunked into
the striped garbage can that was in the Grove!
She also reports that Mr. Sutterley would
make his rounds in the Grove, looking for known class cutters
for each period. If other
grovers saw him coming, they would warn the class-cutters so
they could dash off around the building and avoid being caught!
Ah, that was life in the Grove!
|
 |
  |
Reported by an Anonymous Alumni, Class of 1988:
This alumni reports that he and his buddies hung out in '85-'86
in the Grove area behind the library (the original library, not
that big new one in front of the Circle!). Somewhere around
April of '86, his group started hanging out in the Grove in
the area closer the Social Studies hall. He reports that
there was a bench in the Grove, built by the students in
Metal Shop (think they got that class anymore?). And even though
that basketball court wasn't there at that time,
there was some sports going
on - his buddies played a game called "Tron" which was like
hockey (but without sticks), and using a soda can as a puck!
And he reports there was an occasional boxing match .. or two .. or three.
|
 |
  |
Reported by an Anonymous Alumni, Class of 1988:
This alumni has many fond memories of The Grove.
She remember in her freshman year, it was definitely
customary for freshman who had no older siblings with hierarchy
in the grove to get dunked in half filled garbage cans.
The ones who had it the worst would actually get rolled down
the big hill! Sometimes French teacher Mr. Salvas would open
his window and yell, "GROVER'S" - it was quite comical! To this alumni,
The
Grove was an outlet, an escape, a place to find a smiling face
or a shoulder to lean on! A place that made school worthwhile
as you were accepted no matter who you were while in that
territory. Even today, she has many lasting friendships and
great memories from her school days in the Grove.
|
 |
  |
Reported by webmaster Sue (me), Class of 1988:
Here's my favorite innocent freshman Grove memory: Back in 1985ish, I was
in Bullock's Biology class in I think room 205,
and I looked out the window at the kids in the Grove
behind the library. It had just lightly snowed, and
the students in the Grove were making snowmen.
Aw, how cute, I thought, we still have a touch of childhood in us. But Upon closer
inspection, I realized they were making snow-women, too,
and all snowpeople were anatomically correct ......! My freshman eyes
just couldn't believe it!
|
 |
  |
Reported by an Anonymous Alumni, Class of 1990:
This alumni concurs that the smoking ban was in 1989ish,
as the hangout status of the Grove didn't last into 1990.
In the late 80's, he remembers students would
play a game called "punch hack" by a tree
in the regular Grove behind the gym!
(NOTE: I am not sure what punch hack is, but it sounds potentially
painful!)
|
 |
  |
Reported by an Anonymous Alumni, Class of 1993:
This alumni reports that the Grove was non-existant to his
grade. In fact, he didn't even know where the Grove was
suppose to have been! He has an older brother who used
to hang out in the Grove and tell stories, but this alumni
from 1993 never knew where the Grove was until he read this
site! He remembers some kids in the Corner during his time
at Mendham High.
|
 |
  |
Reported by an Anonymous Alumni, Class of 2003:
This alumni reports he never even heard of The Grove in
his 4 years at Mendham. Not once!
|
|
|
|
|
So in conclusion,
(Mrs. Crane always told us to sum up our writing
with a concluding paragraph, right?) -
the Mendham High School Grove was the outdoor hangout
for over two decades of students, giving many students some
great long-lasting social memories. But shifting attitudes and
newly passed legislation caused the Grove to change over the years.
So today, everything the Grove stood for and represented, and everything
it meant to so many student, has now de-evolved into nothing more
than a patch
of dirt with a trash can. Well, at least that trash can is
nicer looking than
the Butt Can!
And that's all there is!
The end!
If you have some Grove-related memories to share, email me at the
address below!
And forgive me for any inaccuracies or typos - I'm still working on it!
