Workshops


We will be conducting workshops and classes at the d'Art Center and the Norfolk Recreation Department's Visual Arts Center
in December and January. The descriptions given below are for Silver Jewelry Making, Precious Metal Clay, Polymer Clay
and Beading Workshops and classes.

Classes with the Norfolk City Recreation's Visual Arts Department

Silver Jewelry     through Norfolk Parks and Recreation
Students of all levels of proficiency are welcome in all classes.

Instructors coach all students to design and complete their own projects.
Students are responsible for purchasing their own silver.

An expendable supply fee, of $15.00 is due at first class
for all new students and a $8.00 fee for returning students.
All fees are payable by check to Friends of Titustown cash can not be accepted.

Beginning students will learn basic techniques of making jewelry: sawing, filing and cold forging
which are the preparations for soldiering. Design and construction techniques are included.
These techniques will allow the students to complete their own projects.
Most students are able to bezel set a stone by the end of their first ten weeks.

Intermediate students will refine existing skills and acquire more technical skills as
they learn the use of more tools and more advanced and complex techniques that include advanced
design processes. Stone cutting equipment is available for students who wish to cut their own cabochons.

Advanced students in their independent projects may also learn may also learn lost wax casting using
the vacuum casting unit; puddle casting; cuttlefish bone or water casting,;and, ingot making.
Students with proven proficiency may progress to working with gold.

Tools are available for classroom use.

Missed classes may be made up at another class time by prior arrangement. Make-up dates,
due to holidays and art shows will be announced in class.

      If you need to miss a class, you may make it up at any other class period. You don't need permission! Thursday night we only have room for 8 people since we share the room with another class so it's a good idea to check with us. We will have an ALL DAY MAKE UP DAY (in case of snow days or whatever) on Saturday, March 11, 2005 at the Visual Arts Center/Titustown. Most people bring food for a great work and party day. We will have a sign up sheet later in the session. Everyone is invited!!! This is a wonderful day to share with students from other classes you haven't met or don't know

Polymer Clay Jewelry ~ an exciting sophisticated approach!
Conditioning, design, work surfaces, tools,color, color blends, additives, inclusions,
techniques, textures, transfer images, findings, mixed media, molds, baking, carving,
cautions, finishing and polishing will albe be covered in the 3 class sessions. A minimum
of three jewelry items will be made. Learn to make jewelry without the use of torches,
solder and complete a project in a short period of time. Polymer clay requires a minimum
number of tools and space and requires no experience!

Participants bring their own materials: a minimum of six colors of polymer clay (including red, blue and yellow) are needed.
Plus two black and one metallic one pearl and one transparent. Also helpfula tissue blade
or utility knife, or exacto, toothpicks, skewers, clay models tools if you have them (don't buy them).
Rubber stamps and texture plates can also enhance your projects.

Bead Stringing Workshop

January 14, 21, 28 or February 11, 18, 25 2006

      Learn the basics of bead stringing using the different threads, cords and needles. Use crimp beads, different clasp styles, bead tips, memory wire and give your projects a finished look. Knotting for pearls will be the final project. Class Fee $25.00, non resident $35.00 payable to Norfolk City Treasurer. Session 1 Introduction to bead stringing, materials, tools and material sources. String and knot a freshwater pearl bracelet or necklace with French wire ends and a gold filled clasp. Session 2 Explore further information about techniques, design and additional materials. String a necklace with crystal beads on tiger tail and learn to use sterling silver clasp and crimp beads. Session 3 Make a crystal beads bracelet and earrings using sterling silver findings and clasp. Make memory wire bracelets, and wine charms using crystal beads. Materials fee $55.00 payable to "Friends of Titustown," covers beads, thread and sterling silver and gold-filled findings. Tools will be provided for classroom use.

Design ∓ Creativity

This series of classes explores the elements of design using different materials to proactice each one. At
the end of the 5 weeks you will have a book of handmade pages that exhibit these elements, the notes
yo've made and the materials we pass out in class. We will explore line with wire, color with paint,
form with polymer clay, rhythm with rubber stamps, etc..

There is a materials fee of $25.00 payable to the Frients of Titustown (FOTT)at the first class meeting.

Precious Metal Clay
      Basic introduction to PMC, samples and demonstrations will help the students understand the process. Guidance through their chosen project, including forming, drying, firing and finishing with complete the day. Handouts will be available.

WEARABLE HEARTS
1-4 PM Saturday Afternoon
February 4, 2006

      Students will work with precut heart shapes in brass and copper, brass, copper and aluminum screen, beads, head pins, colored wire (copper, brass, silver, gold, red and black cored wire), permanent color markers, pin and earring findings and epoxy. They will learn to apply textures, letter stamps, stitch with wire, drill, file and patina the precut shapes to embellish them. Six to twelve people make for a good workshop; enthusiasm grows. You'll have 5 or 6 pieces of art by the end of the workshop!
