My name is Steve Lipsky and the art I'm displaying here comes partly from my collection and partly from various artists, dealers, politicians, CIA operatives, and one Lithuanian dwarf! Many people aren't totally clear on exactly what original comic book art and comic strip art is. Henceforth, the following explanation:

What is original art?

Original art is the pencil, pen and ink or painted illustrations printed in comic books, comic strips, magazines and hardcover books used to tell a story, tell a joke, or just illustrate a point (as in a political cartoon).

After the artist sends the drawings and/or illustrations in to the editor and they have been published, the art is subsequently sent back to the artist. The artist can keep the art, give it away, destroy it, or re-sell it, if they so desire. This is where I come in. The art is resold to either a part time dealer like myself, a professional art dealer or to fans at a convention or trade show. The best conventions to obtain original art are the San Diego Con or Chicago Con--both held in the summer. Consult the Cool Links page for links to these and many other conventions.

Original art is unique in that, unlike lithographs, sericels and limited editions, it is truly one-of-a-kind. Whereas limited editions, for example, may be 1 of 500, original art is 1 of 1!!! No other piece like it exists, making each art collection totally unique and different!! Original art--there is no substitute!!!

Why collect art?

Well, why not?! There are many reasons, the most common of which are: favorite character, page from favorite story, historical value, favorite artist, sentimental or nostalgic value. Whatever your reason, collecting art is a fascinating and fun hobby. Not to mention time consuming when hunting for that hard to find treasure. But, it is well worth the effort when the hunt pays off!!

The care and feeding of your art

You must protect your art carefully by either plastic polyurethane bags or mounted and matted in an archival frame. Rag matting that is acid-free is the best. Also, UV (ultra-violet) coated glass helps protect the art from light damage. Keep it in a cool, dry place and avoid direct sunlight.

Also, you must feed and water your art daily if you expect it to grow. Not too much water or it will drown. Never take your art out in public without cleaning up its messes. You can also teach your art to do tricks, like fetch. First, throw a ball. Then, throw your art, but don't expect too much.
