Fear
by Miranda Hawkins

This was just an extra credit piece for my Literary Magazine class. It's not too bad, though. :)

Is it something that can be described?
Not really.
Is it something you can hide from?
Not even in your dreams.
Can you see it,
Touch it,
Smell it?
More often than you might admit.
Does it hide in the recesses of your mind
Or lurk among the shadows of your soul?
Could you find it if you looked?
It's more likely to find you.
Like a prison it entraps you
Causing hellish nightmares
You pray don't come true.
Like poison it consumes you
In toxic fumes of darkness
Causing your mind to tremble
With unnamed terrors.
Even the simplest animals
Can be overcome
By the strength of fear.
Remember
"For dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return."
While fear lives on
For all eternity.
