An Elegy to My Blankie
by Miranda Hawkins

This was written for an assignment in my Literary Magazine class. It was one of my teacher's favorite pieces, but one of my friends actually told me that it scared him. ;)

to my blankie:

i will always cherish
the time we spent together
and I will never forget
your warm fuzzy exterior
with the pastel bunny rabbit print

you were my best friend
and my favorite toy
all rolled into one

i remember the dark stormy nights
when i huddled in bed
using you as a magical shield
to keep all the monsters at bay

and i remember tying you around my neck, shouting,
"Never fear, Supergirl is here!"
then we'd zoom through the house together
until my mom made us stop for dinner

you helped me in all of my greatest scams,
like convincing the four year old down the street
that i could fly
just think, it would have worked, too,
if he hadn't asked me to jump off the roof

as the years passed,
even though i longed to be more ‘mature'
i kept you
after all, you were always my closest companion

i still can't describe the horror
of coming home from my first day of third grade
to find you gone
my mother's words still echo in my ears,
"You don't need that ratty thing anymore.
You're a big girl now."

i cried for a long time
and it seemed like
i would never stop missing you

over time, though, things got better
but i'm not ashamed to admit
that every once and awhile
i wish you were here

so this is for you,
my blankie
i just wanted to tell you
how much you meant to me

with love,
miranda
