The Dark Man
by Miranda Hawkins

This was a poem written in my PEAK English class as an MSA (Mind Stretching Activity). It was based on a short story by Nathaniel Hawthorne called 'Young Goodman Brown.'

He waits within the forest with his coven of blackened souls.
He'll take away your innocence and rake you heart across the coals.
If you've sinned he calls you in the darkness of the night,
Iron bound book in the left hand, bloody pen in the right.
He beckons for you to sign your name, to sign your soul away.
He leads into temptation and the price is too high to pay.
He calls for all the wicked souls to come and fly tonight,
He calls for all the wicked souls to forget what's wrong and right.
Do not be taken by his voice, though sweet it may truly sound,
For once, in blood, you've signed your name, to eternity you are bound.
