2.1. Terms

An expression is an additive combination of any number of terms. In an expression, terms are the elements of the expression that are separated by addition and subtraction operators. An expression has the form:

term ± term ± ... ± term
In the expression:
5x2 - 3xy + y2
these elements are terms:
5x2, 3xy, y2.
