Mathematics and Physics Glossary-- F --F(x), n. (Alg.) is the symbol for a function involving a single variable identified in this case as x. This is only a general statement and a definition of what f(x) actually does is needed before it can be used. it is usually defined by means of an algebraic expression. F(x,y), n. (Alg.) is the symbol for an implicit function involving two variables, identified in this case as x and y. F-1(x) , n. (Alg.) is the symbol for the inverse of f(x). Face, n. 1. (Geom.) A planar surface of a geometric solid. 2. (Math.) For a topological graph, it is any single area completely enclosed by edges. The area surrounding the graph, outside its boundary edges, is considered as one of the faces of that graph. Also called a region. -- Face angle, n. (Math.) The angle formed between two edges of a polyhedral angle. -- Face diagonal, n. (Geom.) a diagonal of a solid which lies entirely in one face of the shape. Factor n. (Math.) One of the elements or quantities which, when multiplied together, form a product. |
