THE
TERROR (fear) OF THE LORD
"Knowing therefore the TERROR OF THE LORD, we persuade men; . . . for the love
of Christ constraineth us." [2 Corinthians 5:11,14].
When one considers the tremendous promises of God revealed in one expanding
vision after another, from glory to glory, we are at least in some measure aware
of this blessed calling which we have in Christ, and it leaves us almost
overwhelmed with awe and breathless wonder, Surely it is not comely for the
believer to become overly giddy and self-centered in irrational behaviour, when they consider the heights to which
the Spirit of God is leading, but every forward step ought to have a sobering
effect upon us, bringing forth a humility of spirit, High callings, lofty
heights need to be balanced by the TERROR OF THE LORD. Indeed all "things in
moderation" however each believer is subject to the "touch" of the Holy Spirit
and must submit to His leading.
This very word "terror"
needs some careful examination, because of the horrendous, negative programming
by religious systems, until the very word conjures up thoughts of dread, horror,
panic, as an Omnipotent One comes in wrath to pour out judgments and devastation
upon mankind, This is all a very gross caricature of our God, and a distortion
of truth.
Our English word "terror"
literally means: state of extreme fear; violent dread; fright, And it is from
all this negative aspect that many have formed their creed and opinion of our
God, as if He were a terrifying Tyrant, He is not, and nowhere in the Word is He
revealed as such, save in the things which man imputes to Him, out of man's own
corrupt nature and emotion, But God is NOT A MAN, nor is He motivated by the
perversity found in man, All of His actions are motivated by His nature of LOVE─
even when those actions are directed toward correction and restoration to
rightness.
The Greek word that is used
in our text for "terror" is "phobos" and quite simply means fear. It is the same
Greek word that is carried over into our English word "phobia," which is an
irrational, persistent fear of some particular object. But that again is in the
negative sense.
Fear is defined as a
painful emotion marked by alarm, or disquietness. But fear is more than just
an emotion, it is also an ATTITUDE OF MIND.
There are three kinds of
fear of which we would take note. First, there is a superstitious fear, born of
ignorance, which causes one to be in bondage and very disquieted. But this fear
can well be overcome and dispelled by the truth. For when you know the truth, it
shall set you free from that fearful emotion produced by ignorance. For example:
One summer I spent two weeks up in the mountains holding meetings with some
folk. I slept in a screened in porch, and enjoyed the fresh mountain air. But
one night I awoke to hear a very strange noise just a few feet away─ and it
caused a sudden disquietedness within, until I remembered that one brother had
told me earlier in the day how the deer came up close to eat the watermelon
rinds which were thrown out for them. That knowledge immediately quieted the
inner unrest, for the truth bursting through on the conscious mind set me free
of the unknown, and I went back to sleep. Truth is the cure for superstitious
fear.
Then there is a slavish
fear, such as that which a servant has towards a master, especially that fear of
punishment for bad conduct. This is not the kind of fear in which we serve God,
although it is the motivation of many who say, "I fear God." Much of
Christendom has tried to hold their people to a rigid standard of laws and
traditions with this form of fear. Picturing God as a Despot or Tyrant, standing
ready to lash out with some form of punishment at every misdeed or false step.
Condemnation and curses seem to be the realm of their control over people,
producing a very slavish fear. It is by reason of such fear that we have the
questionable, noble ambition to get to heaven, just so that we might escape
hell.
They are not motivated by
any deep love for God, desiring to dwell in His presence, they only want to
escape any negative consequences.
"Fear hath torment."[1 John
4:18]. The Greek word here for "torment" literally means "restraint." Slavish
fear produces a bondage, a restraint. If one is afraid of the dark, they will
not venture out into the night. If they are afraid of the water, they have to
overcome that fear if they would learn to swim. Slavish fear can become very
confusing, restraining, until one is shut in to a very small world of
unhappiness and unrest.
The very phrase, "God is
going to get you for that," which has often been spoken by the world, fosters
this slavish fear and negativism. This was obviously the understanding of job's
three friends, which was of little comfort to him. They understood not the
Divine control of the interplay of good and evil, and so Eliphaz states,
"Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished, being innocent? or where were the
righteous cut off? Even as I have seen, they that plow iniquity, and sow
wickedness, reap the same. By the blast of God they perish, and by the breath of
His nostrils are they consumed." [Job 4:7-9]. His reasoning was simple, and
very narrow minded, and only partially true. Since he did not understand how GOD
could "make peace, and create evil," [Isaiah 45:7], therefore if any trouble
came your way, it had to be because you had done wrong, and God was striking out
at you. While it is true, one can reap what they sow, it is also true that "it
is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for
evil." [1 Peter 4:7]. And GOD is in control of all of this all of the time.
A revelation of the true
character of God, and a pure definition of His love nature, which chastens and
corrects, but never through coercion, will change this slavish fear into a more
healthy attitude and proper fear of God.
This brings us to the
third kind of fear, GODLY FEAR, that attitude of awe and reverence born out of
love and deep respect, not as a shaking and trembling, but that which produces a
circumspect walk before the Lord. We will serve Him, surrender our all to Him,
because we love Him, and truly we "love Him, because He first loved us." [1 John
4:19].
How we need a resurgence of
the FEAR OF GOD to fill us, and sweep over the nations. A deep sense of awe and
reverence for all that God truly IS.
Jacob had deceived his
father Isaac and received the birthright blessing, taking it away from his
brother Esau, and then had to flee for his life, when Esau proposed to kill him.
So Jacob came to a certain place to tarry for the night, and lay down to sleep.
And he dreamed─ a ladder that reached to heaven, with the angels of God
ascending and descending on it. When "Jacob awaked out of his sleep, he said,
Surely the Lord is in this place, and I knew it not. And he was afraid, and
said, How dreadful is this place! this is none other but the house of God, and
this is the gate of heaven. [Genesis 28:16-17].
"How dreadful is this
place." Again we note the word "dreadful" from the Hebrew "yare" meaning: to be
feared, reverenced. It had been a very awesome experience. The fear of God
was upon Jacob, not a slavish fear, not a negative dread of some calamity, but a
deep reverence, suddenly recognizing how much GOD WAS IN THAT PLACE. The
visitation was all positive. The promise given to him was deeply thrilling. And
it produced in him such a feeling of respect, reverence, and a desire to
WORSHIP GOD, that he took the stones he had used for his pillow, "set it up for
a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it," as a sign of worship to his God.
How we need this
revelation! Not only to know how much HE IS GOD, but that He is GOD EVERYWHERE
WE ARE, even if we are brought to a place where we only have a stone for
a pillow. Caught between a rock and a hard place, and it all seems so
difficult. Yet to know that the presence of God is there, till we reverence God
in the midst of our hard situations and difficult trials.
When Israel was sent into
captivity for their disciplines, the king of Assyria sent in strange nations to
take over their land, people that "feared not the Lord: therefore the Lord sent
lions among them, which slew some of them." [2 Kings 17:25]. And so it was
decided to bring back some of the priests which they had removed out of the
land, so that they could "teach them the manner of the God of the land... how
they should fear the Lord." Yet, while one of the priests "taught them how they
should fear the Lord," still "every nation made gods of their own," with the
result that "they feared the Lord, and served their own gods." [2 Kings 17:33].
They would keep some of the rituals and ceremonies with an outwardly observed
reverence for God, because they did not want to be destroyed by any more lions,
but in their heart they still served their own gods.
Such has also been the
practice of much of Christendom. They served the Lord, went to church, paid
their tithes, whatever they felt was necessary to keep the favour of God,
because they feared His wrath and punishments. But the rest of their heart was
taken up with their own desires─ serving the god of this world in its pleasure,
power, fame, material goods, etc. This mixture is CONFUSION! And thus correctly
labeled, "Babylon," which literally means confusion.
Surely God has been
processing deep into the hearts of His out-called, to strip away everything
which has been a god I unto them― the idols of self, things which demand their
devotion. Indeed, anything we worship and devote ourselves to, instead of
Jesus Christ, is ANTI-CHRIST. For the Greek word "anti" literally means: INSTEAD
OF. Anything that takes the place of Christ from being first in our life, is
anti-christ. "In all He must have the pre-eminence." [Colossians 1:8]. And
anything, or anyone that draws away from this central supremacy of Christ, is
anti-christ, instead of Christ.
Religious confusion has so
distorted the image of God, that He is no longer feared, nor served with due
reverence and awe. There are some who have made God so austere in their doctrine
that it creates an impasse with new believers. Love is eliminated from the
character of God and where there is the absence of Love, there is an absence of
God.
We also are admonished, to
have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence (modesty) and
GODLY FEAR. [Hebrews 12:28]. We love Him, we have deep respect for Him, He is so
great and marvellous, that we do not want to do one thing that would displease
Him. Not out of a slavish fear, not out of a fear of punishment, but because we
LOVE HIM. Love becomes the true motivating force for righteousness, and a right
living before Him. Love also produces that intense awe and reverence, to magnify
and glorify Him.
There is no need for a
"letter of the law" saying, don't do this, don't do that, when the heart is
filled with pure love for Him. Love doth not behave itself unseemly, rejoiceth
not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in truth." [1 Corinthians 13:5-6]. We have no
desire for the ways of unrighteousness. It is not a loss, it is not a sacrifice
to give up the things of the world and the flesh, once the love of God has
filled our hearts― for we have turned away from the realms of death, to receive
of His life, IN THE FEAR OF GOD.
It is the fear of God, the
reverence, the awe, the love for Him, which constrains us, and causes us to
desire that everybody else would fear Him also. That is why we seek to persuade
men! It is because we love Him, and desire that everybody else would come to
love Him, also. He is greatly to be praised. Ye that fear the Lord, praise Him."
[Psalm 22:23].
We find that this same
Greek word for "godly fear" has been translated as "DEVOUT," in Luke 2:25,
Simeon, the same man was just and DEVOUT (or, God-fearing), waiting for the
consolation of Israel: and the holy Spirit was upon him."
Obviously these two things
go together― the fear of God, and the holy Spirit upon us. The more we are
filled with reverence for God, the more we are prepared to be filled with His
Spirit, and the more His Spirit dwells in us, the greater will be our reverence
for God. You cannot have the one without the other. The deeper your reverence
for God, the more you will long to be filled, yes, be of ONE SPIRIT with Him.
And the more you are ONE SPIRIT in Christ, the greater will be your fear of God.
It is difficult to believe
that many of the charismatics of our day, people who claim to have been filled
with His Spirit, have truly received of Him, when they are not just and devout.
Every advance in the realms of the Spirit will be accompanied by greater awe and
reverence and holiness, so that we will not do despite to the Spirit of grace,
but will walk well-pleasing unto our Lord, as vessels meet for His indwelling.
Recognizing that we are the temples of God― that the Sovereign God of the
universe deigns to dwell within us, ought to produce a deep and abiding
reverence for Him.
How true are the words of
Paul, that many would still retain a form of godliness (piety, reverence) but
deny the power thereof." [2 Timothy 3:5]. They may sit in silence, without even
a whisper in some sanctuary, with a form of reverence, and yet not have the true
power thereof, then what is the benefit or profit? The life remains unchanged,
lacking the fear of the Lord.
Surely a definite part of
the working and purpose of His judgments in us, is to remove all the psuedo
forms of piety; the simulated, insincere profession of godliness, that we might
come into the reality thereof. Day by day He is striping away all the
masquerades, the religiosity so affected and unreal. We are being made naked and
bare before Him, that we might be clothed upon with His righteousness, to be
JUST and DEVOUT .
Now, we would like to go on
and point out that there is a definite connection between the FEAR OF THE LORD
and SUBJECTION TO THE LORD. "We have had fathers of our flesh which corrected
us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather BE IN SUBJECTION unto
the Father of spirits, and live?" [Hebrews 12:9].
True reverence therefore
produces subjection unto the Lord, which in turn brings forth an outflow of HIS
LIFE. Heart-felt obedience to the Lord is the outward manifestation of our
reverence. One might observe a high state of piety as far as outward actions go,
and yet the heart can be far
from submission to the will of God.
What daring, rebellious spirits, are manifested in the world today. No respect
for parents, for the laws of the land, and certainly very little for God. The
spirit of this condition will subtlely draw us away from the fear of the Lord,
if we do not constantly guard against it.
"For the Lord spake thus to
me with a strong hand, and instructed me that I should not walk in the way of
this people, saying.... SANCTIFY THE LORD of hosts Himself; and LET HIM BE YOUR
FEAR, and let Him be your dread (awe)." [Isaiah 8: 11, 13].
The fear of man bringeth a
snare! Don't walk in the way of this people, don't be taken up with their fears
born out of superstition and ignorance, causing a slavish dread to unite them
into unholy unions to fight one another. But set the Lord apart, "sanctify the
Lord, "and let HIM be your fear." Put Him first and foremost in all things, and
be joined to Him in complete submission and obedience. Turn your obedience from
these carnal things which have controlled you through their fear, and in
reverence to God give HIM your complete allegiance. "Know ye not, that to whom
ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey;
whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?" [Romans 6:16].
It is something that has to
go far beyond words, it is a part of the deep inworking of His Spirit. But we
can "sanctify the Lord" in our hearts, and set Him apart from all men, that He
might be our FEAR, be first and foremost in our life.
Religion has, in the
consciousness of men, so lowered God from His high and lofty place, attributing
to Him all the attributes and base emotions of the flesh, all the weaknesses of
men, until they have a God no greater than themselves, and therefore not even
worthy of their respect. They speak of "THE MAN upstairs." That is horrible
irreverence! "God is not a man." [Numbers 23:19]. Furthermore, "Even though we
once did estimate Christ from a human viewpoint and as a man, yet now we have
such knowledge of Him that we know Him no longer in terms of the flesh." [2
Corinthians 5:16, Amplified]. We must SANCTIFY THE LORD― set Him apart, to be
unto us that High and Holy One that inhabiteth eternity, and yet dwelleth in the
hearts of the humble.
It is this motivation then,
that will cause us to desire that others also come and serve the Lord, to truly
fear the Lord. And this will be the message of that messenger company, "having
the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every
nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people, saying with a loud voice, FEAR GOD,
AND GIVE GLORY TO HIM; for the hour of His judgment is come: and WORSHIP HIM
that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters."
[Revelations 14:6-7].
"And the Lord spake unto
Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed Me not, TO SANCTIFY ME in the eyes of the
children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land
which I have given them." [Numbers 20:12]. It was to be the highest priority of
their ministry, to sanctify God in the eyes of the people, but they failed to do
this, and it also cost them their own entrance into the promised land.
What does it mean to
"sanctify the Lord?" It means that we completely set Him apart from everything
else, that HE alone might be GOD in our life. God had told Moses to speak to the
Rock, and it would bring forth water for Israel to drink. But Moses went beyond
this command. The people had so irritated him it caused him to speak
"unadvisedly with his lips." [Psalm 106:33]. Then he smote the Rock twice, and
the waters gushed out. But God saw all this action, and said, "You did not
SANCTIFY ME in the eyes of the people." Notice the words Moses had used, "Hear
now, ye rebels, must we fetch you water out of this rock?" Moses didn't have to
fetch water out of the rock, he only had to speak to it, and the water would
have flowed forth in abundance.
How prone men have been to
forget to SANCTIFY THE LORD. We prayed, we fasted, we believed, and we place the
emphasis on what WE did, or had to do, rather than to exalt the great God of
love, who in mercy condescended to our low estate.
Moses was, in effect, God's
representative on the scene. And when the murmuring of the people got to him, he
reacted. We do not condemn him for this, recognizing that we also are very, very
human. But our humanity still is no excuse. And in this moment, by his action,
Moses was saying, "God is disgusted, and I am disgusted, but if we have to
provide water, we'll do it." Because of this re-action of Moses, God was not
sanctified, he was not set apart in the eyes of Israel, but actually He was
portrayed as a "man who had endured all he could take." In effect, it was
saying, God will bear with you, but sooner or later His patience will wear out,
just like men, and suddenly His wrath will appear on the scene. Thus, Moses'
action, as God's representative, did not set God apart from the baser emotions
of men, it did not sanctify the Lord.
Now, of a truth, God is
apprehending a people, to conform them to His image, causing them to be
partakers of His divine nature, that they might be "ambassadors for Christ, as
though God did beseech by us: we pray in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to
God." [2 Corinthians 5:20]. HIS REPRESENTATIVES, the manifestation of Himself
through them. Thus it is essential that we SANCTIFY THE LORD, set Him apart from
humanity. Lifting Him ever higher! Fulfilling another aspect of that tremendous
promise, "And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto Me."
[John 12:32]. I know that primarily this speaks of His being lifted up on the
Cross, and that the ultimate result of His giving His life at Calvary means the
reconciliation of all men. But we see also another very fitting application,
that we must LIFT HIM UP from the earthy, out of the muck of the base emotions
of men, to be GOD, Sovereign God in the eyes of the people. Furthermore, we do
not have to draw the men to Him, we need only LIFT HIM UP, SANCTIFY HIM, and He
will draw all men unto Himself. Praise His holy name!
We read of how the maiden
gives the charge, "I charge you, O daughters of Jerusalem, if ye find my
Beloved, that ye tell Him, that I am sick of love." And they answer her back,
"What is thy Beloved more than another beloved, O... thou fairest among women?
what is thy Beloved more than another beloved, that thou dost so charge us?" And
so she begins her description of Him, "My beloved is white and ruddy, the
chiefest among ten thousand. His head... His locks... His eyes... His cheeks...
His lips... His hands... His legs... His countenance..." With vivid description
she speaks of every part of His being, until finally she has exhausted all the
words and phrases in her attempt to convey a verbal image of Him, and she ends
by saying, "Yea, He is altogether lovely. This is my Beloved, and this is my
Friend, O daughters of Jerusalem." And what is the reaction of these daughters,
when she has so LIFTED HIM UP, exalted Him, revealed Him as being so desirable?
Immediately they enquire, "Whither is thy Beloved gone, O thou fairest among
women? Whither is thy Beloved turned aside? that we may seek Him with thee."
[Song of Solomon 5:8-16, 6:1].
So lifted up, so appealing,
so out of the ordinary, now they are ready to seek Him also. The more our God is
sanctified in the eyes of the people, the more they shall desire Him. But how
can we lift Him up, when we do not even know who He IS? How can we set Him
apart, unless we have a revelation of Him in away that takes Him out of the
creeds, doctrines, traditions of men? And if we are to become His manifestation
in the earth, then certainly there are some vital, essential changes needed in
us, that we might be true declarations of our God. That is why "judgment must
begin at the house of God." [1 Peter 4: 17]. That is why we are learning to
WELCOME HIS JUDGMENTS even in our lives. For out of all the stripping away of
the carnality of the flesh, shall emerge a new manifestation of HIS LIFE. And
the more He is revealed and lifted up, the more He will draw all men unto
Himself.
Lift up the God of
regeneration, and He will fulfill that regeneration process. Lift up the God of
restoration, and He will restore all things to Himself. Lift Him up as the
Healer of all our diseases, and people will be drawn to His healing. Lift Him up
as the Christ which indwells us by His Spirit, and people will seek to be filled
with Him. Lift Him up as the God of love, and people will be drawn to, receive
of, and live out His love life.
Truly, when "the mountain
of the Lord's house shall be established IN THE TOP of the mountains, and shall
be EXALTED ABOVE the hills; (then) all nations shall flow unto it. And many
people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord,
to the house of the God of Jacob; and He will teach us of His ways, and we will
walk in His paths." [Isaiah 2:2-3].
Well spoken are the words
of John the Baptist, He must increase, but I must decrease." [John 3:30].
Paul and Barnabas would not
accept any praise nor honour of their own person, but when the crippled man at
Lystra was healed, and the people started to call them gods, and would have done
sacrifice unto them, immediately Paul and Barnabas "rent their clothes, and ran
in among the people, crying out, and saying, Sirs, why do ye these things? We
also are men of like passions with you, and preach unto you that ye should turn
from these vanities UNTO THE LIVING GOD." [Acts 14:15]. Thus they SANCTIFIED THE
LORD in the eyes of the people.
Sometimes just an attitude,
a small action, a very few words can turn people's eyes away from the Lord, and
to other things. How we need to guard against this at times.
But Jeshurun (poetic name
for Israel) waxed fat, and kicked: thou art waxen fat, thou art grown thick,
thou art covered; then he forsook God which made him, and LIGHTLY ESTEEMED the
Rock of his salvation." [Deuteronomy 32:15].
This is some allegory that
is used here― between Israel and an ox. When the ox had grown fat, he became
sassy, forgot that his master had provided all the things necessary for growth
and development, and now he turns and kicks at his master. Likewise, we need to
beware, that with the enrichment of spiritual rain and blessing from the Lord,
lest we, too, begin to kick― turn from Him to rest in our own fatness, and thus
LIGHTLY ESTEEM the Rock of our salvation. We must not lose our respect, our FEAR
OF THE LORD, and treat these revelations of depth which God is giving, with a
light spirit. But rather, may we continually cry out with the Psalmist, "O
magnify the Lord with me, and LET US EXALT His name together." [Psalm 34:3].
"Beloved, let us cleanse
ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness IN
THE FEAR OF THE LORD." [2 Corinthians 7:1].
While there is, of
necessity, those things which we are admonished to put off, in the cleansing of
ourselves― "put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy
communication out of your mouth. Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have PUT
OFF THE OLD MAN with his deeds," [Colossians 3:8-9], there are also vast areas
within us which only GOD can cleanse and strip away. And again we see this as
His "judgments" at work in us. They are destined for our good, to bring us into
His holiness. And while "no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but
grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of
righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby." [Hebrews 12:11].
Therefore, "I have hoped in
Thy judgments." For "before I was afflicted I went astray: but now I have kept
Thy Word." "I know, O Lord, that Thy judgments are right, and that Thou in
faithfulness hast afflicted me." [Psalm 119:43, 67,75]. Whatever the process,
however deep the cleansing, thank God for its working, that we might perfect
holiness IN THE FEAR OF THE LORD."
Abraham provides us an
excellent example that shows the fear of the Lord in its deeper workings. At the
time that he was put to the test, and asked to offer up his son Isaac, when the
lad was already bound upon the altar, and Abraham had raised his knife to slay
his son, the Lord spoke to him, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou
anything unto him: FOR NOW I KNOW THAT THOU FEAREST GOD, seeing that thou hast
not withheld thy son, thine only son from Me." [Genesis 22:12]. What was this ,
evidence of the fear of God in his life? His complete subjection to the commands
of the Lord. FULL OBEDIENCE revealed the extent of the fear of God in Abraham.
There can be NO
RESERVATIONS if we truly fear the Lord. Why are there so many partial
consecrations? Because there is a lack of the fear of the Lord. Promises are so
easily made, and just as easily broken. We do not say this with any pointed
finger of condemnation, conditions as they are, one cannot expect more, when
even the leaders of the people have no strong fear of the Lord, but are more
interested in building their own kingdoms. Not until we, ourselves, know the
fear of the Lord, can we persuade others to likewise fear, and obey Him.
In the long-suffering of
God, He has allowed men to play their own games, while they are also serving
Him. But more and more of His judgments are being applied, the day of purging
and cleansing is upon us, and the need is for TOTAL COMMITTMENT, abandonment to
Him. Having endured the frustration and confusion of mixing the flesh with the
Spirit, two realms that are contrary to each other there has been no rest, no
peace. Now we long for His judgments, and the turning to rightness, that the
fear of the Lord might fill us, and hold us to that path of
righteousness, where in He shall be glorified.
"What man is he that
feareth the Lord? him shall he teach in the way that he shall choose. His soul
shall dwell at ease; and his seed shall inherit the earth. The secret of the
Lord is with them that fear Him; and He will shew them His covenant." [Psalm
25:12-14].
The fear of the Lord! Not the fear of
man
Who boasts of his glory and might,
And yet is a snare, the weak to
impair,
As he moves through the shades of
night.
The fear of the Lord! Not a slavish
fear
To fetter the soul in its grasp,
To taunt and dismay, terrorize the
day,
More deadly than venoms of asp.
The fear of the Lord! Not
superstitious fear
Which out of gross ignorance is born,
Emotions that groan to face the
unknown,
And many frail creatures suborn.
The fear of the Lord! Pure awe and
respect,
Love's rev'rence that governs the
soul,
Mid discipline's rod, to glorify God,
His Spirit controlling the whole.
The fear of the Lord! That balances
all
The actions in whom it doth dwell,
Till all of thy ways redound to His
praise,
And His life in thee doth excel.
O, fear of the Lord, all earth doth
await
The hour wherein thou shalt reign,
When all men shall see thy reality,
And bow to thy glorious domain.
