Chapter 15
HIS MERCY ENDURETH FOREVER
"0 give thanks unto the Lord; for He
is good: for His mercy endureth for ever. ―Who remembered us in our low estate:
for His mercy endureth for ever: And hath redeemed us from our enemies: for His
mercy endureth for ever." [Psalm 136:1, 23-224].
With a negative message,
which they erroneously call the gospel, good news, preachers have endeavoured to
make people sin-conscious, trouble-conscious, devil-conscious; combined with
perverted concepts of judgment and wrath. Gladly do we turn away from such
distortions of the truth, and open our hearts to the holy Spirit, that He might
quicken to us of the love and grace of our Lord Jesus Christ until we truly
become MERCY-CONSCIOUS!
"Thou in Thy mercy hast led
forth the people which Thou hast redeemed: Thou hast guided them in Thy strength
unto Thy holy habitation." [Exodus 15:13].
And He brought them to the
border of His sanctuary, even to this mountain, which His right hand had
purchased." [Psalm 78:54].
"Delivering us from the
power (authority) of darkness, and translating us into the kingdom of His dear
Son." [Colossians 1:13].
Step by step God has been
leading His people out of the realm of the carnal mind, and their understanding
is being enlightened, so that their path might become ''as a morning light that
grows brighter as the noon day sun, until we are fully prepared." [Proverbs 4:
18, Literal translation].
The Spirit of God, working
in the heart of His people, His remnant, His first fruits, is bringing them
through a transition into a new dimension which has been unknown to past ages. A
realm of life, a consciousness of triumph and mercy, a vision of glory which
will illuminate and dispel all consciousness of darkness, gloom and despair that
has been cast over the nations.
We read, "For, behold, the
darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people." [Isaiah 60:2].
And certainly the mind of the natural man has never been so darkened as it is in
this day. Hope is gone, fear is rampant. But that is not the end of the matter.
The rest of the verse reads on, "BUT THE LORD SHALL ARISE UPON THEE, and His
glory shall be seen upon thee. And the nations shall come to thy light, and
kings to the brightness of thy rising."
There is unfolding a vision
of mercy and love which shall cause all the past teaching of doom and despair to
vanish as the morning mist evaporates with the rising of the sun. We are to be
"children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of
darkness." [1 Thessalonians 5:5]. "For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are
ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light." [Ephesians 5:8].
We are not of the night, it
does not pertain to us, it is not the message we walk in, nor is it the rule we
live by. Born of the Light, with the nature of the Light, the essence of the
Light within, we need not walk in darkness, nor have any "fellowship with the
unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them." [Ephesians 5:11]. But as
with the dawning of anew day the light increases until the glory of the noon day
sun, shining directly overhead, there are no shadows, but total illumination― so
also His elect shall enter into, yes, become the day of the Lord.
Therefore the believer
today stands at a crisis point, at the end of darkness and the borderline of
full light. If they cross over to the negative, it becomes a shadow leading into
darkness. Indeed, turning one's back to the light, one is immediately faced with
their own shadow, which is but an illusion of the reality of their own being.
"Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness."
Praise God, there are those
who are going on to perfection, to walk in the light as He is in the light, and
they are dying out to the carnal mind― the minding of the flesh, that they might
put on the mind of Christ, possessing the positive.
God is bringing His people
"to the border of His sanctuary, even to this mountain, which His right hand
hath purchased." What mountain? Psalm 48:2 gives the answer, "Beautiful for
situation, the joy of the whole earth, is mount Zion, on the sides of the north,
the city of the great King."
"And in this mountain shall
the Lord of hosts make unto all people a feast of fat things, a feast of wine on
the lees, of fat things full of marrow, of wines on the lees well refined. And
He will destroy (swallow up) in this mountain the face of the covering (veil)
cast over all people, and the veil that is spread over all nations. He will
swallow up death in victory." [Isaiah 25:6-8].
Herein lies promise of the
tremendous unfolding of the mercies of God, as He prepares a feast for all men,
to enrich, to lift up, to make whole. A removal of the veil of death, an ending
of the bondage of corruption, that His life might fill all, and bless all.
If ever there was a veil
that needed to be removed, certainly it is the veil of death― "to be carnally
minded is death," and the veil of unbelief, as spoken of in 2 Corinthians
3:13-14. Moses put a veil over his face, that the children of Israel could not
stedfastly look to the end of that which is abolished: but their minds were
blinded: for until this day remaineth the same veil untaken away in the reading
of the old testament; which veil is done away in Christ. "
Many have thought that the
reason Moses put a veil over his face was because of the reflection of the light
and glory He had absorbed while in the presence of God. And this may have been a
surface reason. But the real reason for the placement of the veil, Paul brings
out, was to this end― that the people would not know at what time the glory
departed, faded away, and because they did not know, they would continue to
carry on as if the light and glory were still there.
The real veil, Paul brought
out, was not the one on Moses' face, but on THEIR MINDS which were blinded― a
veil that remains to this day, until it is done away IN CHRIST. Only the
anointing of the Spirit of God can illumine and impart revelation, until we know
the truth which sets men free.
It is amazing how people
are willing to carryon with the form and ceremony and ritual of their creed and
doctrine, not knowing that the light, life, and glory have long ago departed
from that religious routine.
Praise God, "where the
Spirit of the Lord is," yea, where "THE SPIRIT IS LORD," and men and women
"shall turn to the Lord, the veil shall be taken away." How we rejoice to see
that there is a rending of this veil also, and many are finding in His total
Lordship of their lives, that they now see what has been hid "from the wise and
prudent," [Matthew 11 :25], of this world, and yet is being revealed to those
who are turning to the Lord.
Brought to THIS MOUNTAIN―
even to Zion. Here again we find it is threefold, for Zion is geographical, it
is a positional place, and it is personified in a people.
"Mount Zion, on the sides
of the north." [Psalm 48:2]. We note the word "sides" coming from the Hebrew
"yarekah" and also given as "thigh." But there is more to this, for Israel took
their point of direction from facing the east, the rising of the sun and the
dawning of the new day. In facing the east, then the north was on the left. Now
we find new meaning for the phrase, "beautiful for situation," for this location
can immediately be transferred to our Lord Jesus Christ.
Now, "Whom the Lord loveth
He chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom He receiveth." [Hebrews 12:6].
Having covered the thoughts of chastening in previous chapters, we shall note
only― whom the Lord loveth, and ultimately receives, for He is RECEIVING into
Himself a people.
The Lord said to Moses,
"There is a PLACE BY ME, and thou shalt stand upon a rock: and it shall come to
pass, while My glory passeth by, that I will PUT THEE IN A CLIFT OF THE ROCK,
and will cover thee with My hand while I pass by." [Exodus 33:21-22].
RECEIVED― a place by Me― IN
THE CLIFT OF THE ROCK. How symbolic this experience of Moses becomes for us. For
He who is our Rock, had a clift made in His side, HIS LEFT SIDE, and He is
receiving into His bosom a people whom He has chastened and prepared for
receiving. There they shall "dwell in the secret place of the Most High, abiding
under the shadow of the Almighty." [Psalm 91:1]. The way has been opened into
the reality of the bosom of God. Zion has a beautiful situation, dwelling in the
secret place, close to the heart of the Almighty, learning of His love and
compassion― the heartbeat of mercy.
"I go to prepare a place
for you, I will come again, and RECEIVE YOU UNTO MYSELF; that where I am, there
ye may be also." [John 14:3].
Geographically, Zion
becomes an allegory, and tracing through some of the historical record, we find
that God once dwelt there, but then the glory departed, and Zion had to pass
through her judgments before He would return to her again.
Micah 3: 11-12 gives a very
clear and applicable record of what has happened to Zion. "The priests thereof
teach for hire, and the prophets thereof divine for money: yet will they lean
upon the Lord, and say, Is not the Lord among us? none evil can come upon us.
Therefore shall Zion for your sake be plowed as a field."
Teaching for hire! Indeed,
the very moment a preacher comes along and tells you, "the labourer is worthy of
his hire," [Luke 10:7], they are also telling you that they are "hirelings," and
they are requesting their rewards. It is true, a labourer is indeed worthy of
his hire, but it is also true that there is a realm beyond being an hireling,
and it is where service is given freely, OUT OF LOVE, asking for nothing in
return, knowing that it is more blessed to give, than to receive. He who freely
gives out of love, shall also find that "like begets like," and others shall
also give again unto him, "good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and
running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye
mete withal shall it be measured to you again." [Luke 6:38]. Service rendered
for hire is one thing, but a ministry of love is far different, it goes beyond
hire," and while there is no thought of return, it does come back in measures
which far surpass the limitations of hire.
Nevertheless, without
over-emphasizing the point, the priests were teaching for hire, and the prophets
were giving forth their word for money, and therefore Zion shall be plowed as a
field. It is a condition that must be remedied, and so the "time is come that
judgment must begin at the house of God." [1 Peter 4: 17]. God has many unique
plowmen which are being sent out to PLOW DEEP their furrows. It is bringing
consternation to the priests and prophets (i.e. the preachers of our day). They
still try to "lean upon the Lord, and say, Is not the Lord among us? none evil
can come upon us." They would claim immunity from the plowers, and insist they
are doing the work of the Lord, and these pressures ought not to come against
them. But for all their stance, ZION SHALL BE PLOWED. However, that is
not the end of the matter. "Wherefore it shall come to pass, when the Lord hath
performed His whole work upon mount Zion and on Jerusalem, (then) I will punish
the fruit of the stout heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his high
looks." [Isaiah 10: 12].
How glorious is this
outworking of His purpose. He knows exactly how deep the plowers will have to
plow, and He knows exactly who to use for the plower, saying, "I have created
the waster to destroy." [Isaiah 54: 16]. He has raised up His Assyria, He has
brought about the confederation of evil men that set about to rip up Zion, and
we dare not bring against them a railing accusation. HE will use these appointed
instruments to oppress and chasten Zion into position, till she is prepared to
bring forth good fruit. "Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous.
But grievous: nevertheless afterwards it yielded the peaceable fruit of
righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby." [Hebrews 12:11].
But once these "plowers"
have done their appointed task, God also has a plan for them― they, too, shall
be punished, brought low, and subdued. For, after all, "In Christ shall all be
made alive, but every man in his own order."[1 Corinthians 15:22-23]. And their
order shall come, too, and they shall receive of His JUDGMENTS, and of His mercy
and grace, for "iniquity shall have an end."
Zion, having been duly
plowed, we then read, "Thus saith the Lord. I AM RETURNED UNTO ZION." [Zechariah
8:3]. Certainly, we are drawing near to the time of His return to Zion. Zion is
being prepared to welcome her King, and we are crying out, with intense desire,
"Even so, come. Lord Jesus."
"For the Lord hath chosen
Zion; He hath desired it for His habitation." [Psalm 132:13]. And do note the
word "chosen" from a Hebrew word meaning: TO CHOOSE AFTER TESTING. First He will
choose you FOR testing, apprehending you to be processed, purged, cleansed, and
put to the test to see if you meet all the specifications. And once you have
been tested and found approved, He will choose you again, to be received into
Himself. It is in this regard that Jesus declared, "For many are called but few
chosen." [Matthew 22:14].
Paul, also, knowing this,
said, "Wherefore also we pray always for you, that our God would count you
worthy of this calling, and fulfill all the good pleasure of His goodness, and
the work of faith with power: that the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be
glorified in you, and ye in Him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord
Jesus Christ." [2 Thessalonians 1:11-12].
"For not he that commendeth
himself is approved, but whom the Lord commendeth." [2 Corinthians 10:18].
Wuest expanded, "But he
whom the Lord recommends, that one has His stamp of approval placed upon him,
that approval being based upon the fact that the approved one has met the test
satisfactorily."
Therefore, the more we
yield ourselves to Him, and the more He fills us with Himself, so that it is
"yet not I, but Christ liveth in me," then it is certain we shall have His
approval, for of Him it is written, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well
pleased." And it is of this CHOSEN ZION that we also read, "He hath desired it
for His habitation." Saying, "I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will
be their God, and they shall be My people." [2 Corinthians 6:16].
Again, where does this
unique and precious choosing take place? "I have chosen thee in the furnace of
affliction." [Isaiah 48: 10]. Furnace of affliction― judgment in the house of
God― all speaking of the same process. And when the furnace has accomplished its
work, He shall place His approval upon His people, and build them up into an
holy habitation wherein He shall dwell. "When the Lord shall build up Zion, He
shall appear in His glory." [Psalm 102:16].
"Thou in Thy MERCY hast led
forth the people which Thou hast redeemed: Thou hast guided them in Thy strength
unto Thy holy habitation." [Exodus 15:13]. IN HIS MERCY, IN HIS STRENGTH, we are
brought― "we are come unto mount Zion, and unto the city of the Living God, the
heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels, to the general
assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God
the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect, and to Jesus the
mediator of the new covenant." [Hebrews 12:22-24].
Such love, such grace, such
mercy, to bring us to His holy habitation. "And the Lord passed by before him,
and proclaimed; The Lord, The Lord God, merciful and gracious, long suffering,
and abundant in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving
iniquity and transgression and sin." [Exodus 34:6-7].
Herein is the heart of the
gospel, "1 will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on
whom I will shew mercy." [Exodus 33:19].
Jesus Christ, coming forth
as a visible expression of the invisible God, to reveal the heart of the Father
to mankind, taught this mercy over and over again in many of His parables. Such
as in Matthew 20:1-15, of the man who was an householder that hired workers
throughout the day to work in his vineyard, even hiring some at the eleventh
hour of the day, so they only had time to work for one hour. Came time to pay
their wages at the end of the day, and he gave every man a penny. Those who had
been there all day began to complain, they did not feel that these "last hour
workers" deserved as much as they. But the goodman of the house answered, "Is it
not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I
am good?" (verse 15).
That same selfish spirit
pervades Christendom today. When God says, "I will be gracious to whom I will be
gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy." - "I will pour out of
My Spirit upon all flesh." And they all respond, "He can't do that!" They say,
"We have fasted, prayed, served Him all our lives, borne persecutions, denied
ourselves many worldly pleasures, etc. and now you say, HE WILL HAVE MERCY UPON
ALL MEN, He will have all men to be saved? Don't preach a message like that! We
don't want them all to partake of His mercy. We want them tormented eternally in
some diabolical scheme of a fiery hell, as horrible as we can conjecture in our
minds." And so they turn from the grace and mercy of God, and teach their false
doctrines of doom and despair.
But again, Jesus revealed
the tremendous mercy of God upon the most unworthy. Let Paul first describe
their evil state. "When they knew God, they glorified Him not as God, NEITHER
WERE THANKFUL; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart
was darkened." [Romans 1:21]. Then Paul goes on to say how that God gave them
over to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their
own bodies between themselves. The account of their debauchery, wickedness,
perversions, is extreme. A condition that evolved because they would not glorify
God as GOD, NEITHER WERE THANKFUL. Yet Jesus clearly stated that the Most High,
our Father, "IS KIND UNTO THE UNTHANKFUL AND THE EVIL. Be ye therefore merciful,
as your Father also is merciful" [Luke 6:35-36].
Upon whom is He going to
have mercy? Oh, we know the answer to that, He will have mercy on all of us dear
little saints who have walked softly before Him all these years. Of course He
will, but NOT BECAUSE we have been so sweet and pious. He will shew mercy on
whom He will shew mercy, both on the just and the unjust― even upon those
unthankful ones who have gone to the absolute opposite end of the spectrum of
righteousness, so that they are involved in evils so degrading they ought not to
be mentioned. HIS EYE IS GOOD, He is merciful, He is kind unto the unthankful
and the evil, as well as bestowing His blessing and salvation unto the just.
Does this give us an excuse
to go our own selfish way? "Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? GOD
FORBID." [Romans 6:1].
"If he commit iniquity, I
will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of
men: BUT MY MERCY SHALL NOT DEPART AWAY FROM HIM." [2 Samuel 7:14-15].
Certainly He will chasten,
certainly He will execute His judgments, He will set in motion processes of
purification and purging which are extreme, until the whole is thoroughly
cleansed, but for all this, His mercy shall not depart.
"For I am the Lord, I
change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed." [Malachi 3:6].
Of the iniquity of the sons
of Jacob, we need not inquire, suffice it that the record bears out, "As I live,
saith the Lord God, Sodom thy sister hath not done, she nor her daughters, as
thou hast done, thou and thy daughters." [Ezekiel 16:48]. If ever there was a
cause to be consumed, these were guilty enough. And why weren't they consumed?
Because God does not change, and HE IS A GOD OF MERCY!
Indeed, Sodom was dealt
with by fire, and lay desolate for a long time, but He who is merciful has also
promised, "When I bring again their captivity, the captivity of Sodom and her
daughters, and the captivity of Samaria and her daughters, then will I bring
again the captivity of thy captives in the midst of them." [Ezekiel 16:53].
"And so all Israel shall be
saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Zion the Deliverer, and shall
turn away ungodliness from Jacob." But not only shall He have mercy upon all
Israel, but also upon all other nations, including Sodom, "For God hath
concluded them all in unbelief, that He might have mercy upon all." [Romans
11:26, 32].
The iniquity of Israel was
worse than that of Sodom, yet He promised to have mercy on her, and save them
all. Nor will He limit His mercy only to Israel, but rather He concluded Israel
with all other nations, and they are ALL shut up in unbelief, till the day when
HE SHALL HAVE MERCY UPON THEM ALL.
"It is of the Lord's
mercies that we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new
every morning: great is Thy faithfulness." [Lamentations 3:22-23].
"But God, who is RICH IN
MERCY, for His great love wherewith He loved us, even when we were dead in sins,
hath quickened us together with Christ." [Ephesians 2:4-5].
What are we looking for in
these days; judgments and more judgments; chastising and more chastising; tests,
trials, and processings? These are all on the horizon: that is true. But let us
look beyond these corrective measures, and see THE MERCY OF GOD― His mercy will
ensure that we are not consumed. His mercy will sustain us through all the
processings. His mercy will bring us into the fulness of His life. Thank God, He
is anointing the eyesight of a people who are beginning to LOOK FOR THE MERCY OF
THE LORD. They are going to see salvation come out of Zion.
"Let Israel hope in the
Lord: for with the Lord there is mercy, and with Him is plenteous redemption."
[Psalm 130:7].
"For Thou, Lord, art good,
and ready to forgive: and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon Thee."
[Psalm 86:5].
"But Thou, O Lord, art a
God full of compassion, and gracious, and long suffering, and plenteous in mercy
and truth." [Psalm 86:15]. PLENTEOUS― in redemption, in mercy, and in truth.
There is a glorious, unlimited supply of them all! It is time we lift up our
heads, and look for the redemption that draweth nigh. Look for His mercy to
overflow. Look for the truth which shall dissipate the gross error and darkness
of the present time. Significant that the Hebrew word for "plenteous," being
"rabah," has also been translated: to make abundant, multiply, increase, BE IN
AUTHORITY.
Not only shall His mercy be
ever increasing to cover every need, and surpass it, but MERCY SHALL BE IN
AUTHORITY! Mercy has the final word! The whole shall be brought under Mercy's
domain. Truly, then it shall be said, "Mercy and truth are met together;
righteousness and peace have kissed each other." [Psalm 85:10]. For HIS MERCY
ENDURETH FOR EVER!
He tempers His judgments with mercy,
For love is the nature of God,
Yes, love motivates all the working
Of His faithful discipline rod.
And though He must prove and correct thee,
His mercy shall never depart
Thy waywardness
never shall alter
The
out flow of His loving heart.
He's kind to unthankful and evil,
As well as the just and the pure,
Whatever the chaos at present,
His mercy shall ever endure.
We marvel at such lovingkindness,
So far from the nature of man,
But His ways are never as our ways,
Compassion the soul of His plan.
The God of creation ne'er changes,
And therefore men are not consumed,
His wrath and His anger are never
As carnal men often presumed.
They're forces in action correcting,
This truth creed and doctrine
obscure,
But let it be known through all ages,
HIS MERCY SHALL EVER ENDURE!
