Dear Friends

"Of the memorizing of many numbers and the writing of many acronymns there is no end!"

I dialed the wrong number the other day…actually it wasn’t a wrong number it was a different number than I wanted to call. It happened to be a parishoner, and she recognized my voice. We chatted for a moment. I apologized, hung up, and then looked up the right number. My memory had crossed wires again, but it got me to thinking of all of the silly things we have to remember.

When did we become so obsessed with numbers and letter combinations? We could fill books with things things that our parents never had to memorize.

Here is a sampling of what I’m talking about. Do you know your… Social Security numbers, telephone numbers, calling card, numbers, fax numbers, e-mail addresses, License Plate numbers, BP readings, LDL, HDL, garage door opener touch pad, PSA readings, and PIN numbers.

That is just for starters. Put on your hat, and take the following test, you’ll see what I’m talking about… Do any of the following have an meaning for you at all? They are commonly used acronymns or initials, and were just waiting at the surface of my brain to clutter and confuse. AA, AAA, AARP, ABC, ADD, ADHD, AED, AFL, ARC, BBC, BO, BSA, CEO, DVD, DVM, DMV, EP, EPA, ER, ERA, ETA, GPA, GNP, GOD (Guaranteed Overnight Delivery), GOP, GTO, IRA, KGB, KP, KFC, LSMFT, MADD, MBA, MCI, MLK, MTA, MVA, MSW, NBA, NFL, NHL, NCAA, NAACP, NHRA, NJSP, NJEA, NPO, OSHA, NRA, NSA, NYC, OBGYN, OJ, OR, OT, PA, PBA, PDQ, PGA, PLO, PMS, POW, PCUSA, PP&L, PR, PSA, PTO, PVC, Q&A, QT, RCA, R&D, RR, RV, SUV, SADD, SS, SPCA, TB, TLC, TPA, TNT, TV, TNT TWA, UAW, UCC, UK, UN, UPW, USA, VA, VC, VD, VFW, VGA, VP, VCR,VW, WBA, WHO, WD40, WIC, and the unforgettable WWF.

Forgive my indulgence in this rather frustrating act of futility, but do you get my drift? It it any wonder that even young people are saying that they can’t remember things, or that we sometimes feel overwhelmed by it all? Our poor brains have been assaulted by meaningless letters, out of which they had to make some sense.

So, for the sake of our sanity, clarity, and beauty, I offer you the only thing I will ever demand that you remember, but please don’t tell the Confirmation Class.

Here it is, and don’t forget it…..

Jesus loves you!

Pastor Roan
