These translations were done during the course of a two-year teaching assignment at the Foreign Affairs College, Wai Jiao Xue Yuan, in Beijing. Venerable Jing Hui—a Dharma Master in the Linji (Rinzai) tradition, Abbot of Linji's original temple near Shijiazhuang in Hebei Province, and also a Member of the Standing Committee of the Chinese Buddhist Association in Beijing—introduced me to Prof. Yulie Lou, a department chairman at Beijing University. Prof.
Lou's deep knowledge and extensive experience of translating ancient Chinese
texts into modern Chinese were essential in preparing the English texts.
