The  Schoch-Spana /Slaughter Certificate

I could not have imagined this  certificate before it evolved from the challenge of some very disparate elements. Monica  and Donna had special rings that had been made for their Ceremony of Commitment. The  strange, rough-hewn images carved into the gold metal did not suggest an immediate  treatment to me. They also had a stained glass window that they wanted represented and a  particular star constellation. All of this they wanted inside the "Omega"  design!  At first I could not imagine how to incorporate both tiny images from the  ring and a wide image such as the night sky effectively into the same imagery.

So I studied the rings, and trotted off to the library to look at some art books, my  last resort method when my imagination fails me. Surprisingly I discovered a book on Art  Deco Architecture and found that many of the carved images from the ring were taken  from the organic deco patterns on buildings. Finally I had the theme that would bring  everything together. Here was the detail in color and form that I needed to flesh out the  ring designs!  I called Monica and Donna and found that they did, indeed, Like Deco architecture and they told me to go ahead with my ideas. So I experimented with metallic  inks, and a passionate, yet brooding color that seemed to work well with the organic  forms.  Monica and Donna liked the idea of "female imagery" and  "pairs" so I repeated that theme throughout the border design.

When they received the certificate, Monica and Donna appreciated the creative struggle  that had borne this very unique certificate. Donna wrote:
"Once again, you  did a *wonderful* job on the certificate!  We had it framed and it is AMAZING.   The framer really liked it so he spent a lot of time on it (hand leafed the frame to match  your metalic-copper-ish highlights).  We also picked a very subtle Deco frame and the  inner mat is that grayish-eggplant color you used and he hand painted a black bevel that  is fantastic!"

Actual size is 24 inches by 36 inches.
