The  Sweringen/Angarita Certificate

This couple had been attending a Quaker  Meeting and liked the idea of a Quaker Certificate. Eneida is from South America, and  David is from the United States. They wanted their certificate to represent dualities and  the coming together of two worlds, north and south, male and female. Eneida had a fondness  for Egyptian and Mayan art, and wanted the colors to be very "pale and soft". I  experimented with some new "pearlescent" inks on this certificate. Enida chose  the pale pink paper. I think this is an excellent example of how lovely and strong subtle  color can be.

Eneida  was particularly fond of Calla Lilies, Lilacs, Lavender and Roses. The  dualities they chose were sun and moon, corn and wheat, male and female, pluto and uranus,  the American eagle and an ancient Egyptian hawk. The jar with water is a traditional  fertility symbol and David is very fond of the whale. These two symbols worked very nicely  into the water at the bottom of the certificate. They liked the yin yang symbol and the I  Ching symbols. The I Ching symbol presented some challenges because the detail needed  prevented it from fitting into the border, so I came up with the solution of having it  overlap at the center, like a medalion. Then, I suggested that the dove they wanted be  incorporated into two doves in the center of the I Ching, sharing the olive branch, in a  YingYang design. David and Enida enthusiastically embraced this suggestion.

I usually don't have the chance to photograph a certificate with the guests signatures,  however, at the last minute, needed funds for the certificate fell through, and the couple  brought the half-finished certificate to the wedding ceremony, planning on commissioning  the rest of it at a later date. However, the wedding guests donated the missing funds to  complete the artwork.

Actual size is 24 inches by 36 inches.
