Ahoj! (Hello!) Welcome to this website dedicated to discovering the ancestry of the "Smorey" surname. About five years ago I decided to determine the country of origin of my paternal grandparents, Andrew Smorey and Anna Pastircak. That didn't take long but, as happens with many researchers, once you get started it is difficult to stop! I have always enjoyed history so my research has now turned into a major project. I hope you enjoy the information I have compiled so far. It is my hope also that those who share this surname will help "connect the dots" for future generations of Smorey's. I hope you will find this project useful and wish to contribute your information for others to share.
These pages will always need to be updated as my research continues. I am very interested in your opinion of the web site and look forward to your suggestions on how to improve upon what I am doing. Please let me know if the site is easy to navigate, if there are any broken links and if the information is clear and concise or any other comments you might have.
If you have any corrections or additions please send them to me via email. Thanks for taking the time to visit this site and I hope you enjoy your visit and will come back often. Don't forget to sign the Guest Book.
IMPORTANT NOTE: In keeping with standards recommended by the National Genealogic Society, and in respect for rights of privacy, this website will not contain personal information of living persons other than name and date of birth.

A Few Facts to Begin
- Smorey ancestry is traced to Eastern Slovakia, mostly in the province of Spis. Click here for a map.
- The Smorey surname has been spelled a number of different ways depending on the custom of the time and the governing powers of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, for example:
Csmorejak (1701), Csmorecik(1703), Csmorej(1792) Czmorej(1800-1946), Zmorej(1803), and the "Americanized" version spelled Smorey
- In Slovakia today the most common spelling is Cmorej
- There are Cmorej families in Slovakia and Smorey families in the U.S. but I have not been able to draw any direct lines of relationship between family groups. This is also true of the "groups" of Smorey's in the U.S. who live in Pittsburgh, Reading and some in Ohio. How all of these Cmorej/Smorey folks might be related is still under research. Perhaps you can help?

I have worked with many wonderful people since I started on this project. Some of the people below are fellow researchers and others are contacts I have made through my research, all of whom in some way, great or small, have made a contribution towards my success. To all of these people I give a big......
Thank You!
Bill Tarkulich and John Matsko - two experienced researchers who never failed to answer my questions on the Rootsweb Slovakia mailing list. Thanks to you both for all your help!
Yveta (Krelikova) Mayer - originally from Slovakia but now living in the U.S. She answered one of my email postings and helped me establish contact with Cmorej families living today in Slovakia. Thanks Yveta!
Monica Chuna - a fellow researcher who also has Smorey branches in her family tree in and around Reading, Pa.
Lubomir Cmorej - from Kosice, Slovakia who has answered many questions and provided me with details of his family tree. Thank you Lubo! Also, check out his website.
Vlady Vrabel, Mayor of Slatvina, Slovakia. I signed the guest book for his town web site and the next day he sent me an email telling me there were Cmorej families living in his village. We have been corresponding ever since. Thanks Vlady!
