Announcement

The casting pond of the Grande Ronde Angling and Casting Society, at the confluence of the Grand Ronde and Snake Rivers, near Asotin, Washington,  will be completed by June 1, 2001. This pond allows the casting game events to be cast on water and all distance events to be measured to the accuracy of 1/10th of a foot. Now all rods and lines can be tested to their potential under fishing conditions. By experimenting with various combinations, it should be possible to determine what rod action and line design works best for a given type of cast. For fun, and to develop a friendly spirit of competition, a sign has been erected at the pond that lists all the casting games along with the names and scores of the ladies and men holding the present record of first, second and third places.

The following angling and casting games will be available.

Event #1  Dry  Fly Trout  Accuracy

Event #2 Single Handed Distance Fly

Event #3 Two Handed Skagit or Spey Casting from the Left

Event #4 Two Handed Skagit or Spey Casting from the Right

Event #5 Two Handed Overhead Distance

Event #6 All Around Score of the Three Two Handed Events

The Grande Ronde Angling & Casting Society is presently made up of 38 members. The charge to belong to this society is $50 for a lifetime membership. The money is for the construction and maintenance of the casting pond. There are no annual dues.

The casting program is being considered and your comments will be appreciated The casting for score will be allowed anytime between June 1 to December 2. It is difficult for many Society members to participate in the casting games on a given date. Often this date may conflict with their vacation schedule or some other commitments. Most of the society members  visit the Grande Ronde, Clearwater, Salmon and Snake rivers to fish for steelhead in the fall. With this casting program, it will now be possible to participate in the games at a time best suited for a person’s circumstances.

When a caster improves a score on the record sign, their name will be posited with a new record. All the scores cast by the ladies and the men will be kept on a record so that at the end of the casting year, the person with the average score in the two handed events will be awarded a very valuable two handed rod. If this casting program proves successful, then prizes could be awarded to the All Around winners in the first, second, third, and fourth places. To be able to cast a score, a person must be a member of the Society. An official judge must be present during all scoring casts. Members may practice on the pond anytime at no charge. When casting for record, a charge of $2 per event will be assessed. All monies received from membership and casting fees will go toward the cost of the pond’s maintenance and expenses. A wind meter is available. No scores will be allowed if the wind velocity is greater than a given amount. I live at the casting ponds so I should be available to judge your score.
