FLY CASTING TOURNAMENT AND CONTEST NEWS

LAST UPDATE 12/08/98 23:14

WEST COAST SPORTS SHOWS FEATURE ACCURACY FLY CASTING GAMES

For the first time in recent memory there will be a fly casting accuracy game as part of six 1999 International Sportsmen's Expositions shows in the Western United States. The shows are:

Portland Ore. January 7-10; Sacramento, CA, January 13-17; San Mateo CA, February 3-7; Seattle, WA, February 10-14; Denver, CO, Februry 25-28 and Salt Lake City UT, March 4-7.

The game itself will be much like the American Casting Association dry fly event except tougher. The ACA dry fly game allows eight minutes to cast to ten targets between twenty and fifty feet away. The ISE game allows two minutes to cast to ten targets between twenty-five and fifty five feet away.

So that we can all practice here are the rules:

1. Hit or Miss event.

2. 5 targets (30" diameter)

3. 2 minutes to hit 10 targets in order of closest to farthest. Caster will begin with closest target and work out to farthest, back to closest and out again. The targets will be placed at distances of 25', 30', 40', 45' and 55'.

4. Equipment will consist of fly rods not to exceed 9 1/2 feet in length and of a line class not to exceed 7 wt. Lines are to be non-marked (to show distance) floating only. Leaders will be 9' 3x tapered leaders. Flies will be simple yarn tied on in lengths not less than 1/2 inch and not to exceed 1 inch.

5. Scoring: Each caster begins with a perfect score of 100 points and has 2 minutes to hit all ten targets. 3 points will be deducted for each missed target and 0 points deducted for a "Hit". A perfect score will equal 100 points and the lowest score will equal 70 points (10 misses). If the fly "ticks" the water during the false cast it will count as a cast and a miss and the caster must move on to the next target.

6. The caster begins with the fly in hand and no more than the leader and 2 feet of fly line out the tip of the rod. As much fly line as the caster feels necessary can be laid in coils at the casters feet prior to casting.

7. A cast is complete when the fly, leader or line settles on the water on a final forward delivery. The fly must be left unmoved until the judge calls "score". If the caster moves the fly before the juge's call, a demerit equal to 3 points will be charged.

The administrator of the game explains  "These rules have been loosely fashioned after the American Casting Association's Dry Fly Event. The idea is to promote fly casting as a fun competitive sport in a real tournament like setting. "

A trophy and merchandise prize will reward the winner of the Sunday finals and second and third will each receive a merchandise prize. There will be a single all comers class  Each day of the show, except Sunday, there will be  qualifying games on the casting ponds to qualify for the Sunday finals. There will be no qualifying on Sunday so come early to qualify.

Anyone who wants to hit a target learns to use a vertical cast with a vertical loop. We have seen people shoot good scores in accuracy games keeping the fly well away from the body but the vertical cast is the one to beat. On the longest targets many successful casters have the fly coming back in a trailing position beside their body but it goes out to the target vertically and the loop is vertical when it lays down on any target. (We hope it is vertical)

If you live in the West, this is your best chance to see what a genuine accuracy casting game can do for your casting stroke. Your fishing will never be the same again.

$10,000.00 FLY CASTING PRIZE TOURNAMENT

CANCELED

The Texas conclave and the prize money fly casting contest has been canceled. There is discussion of doing this in November, 1999

There was to be a ten thousand dollar first prize in the open division of a fly casting tournament  during the Texas FFF conclave in Fort Worth Texas November 20 - 22nd, 1998.

The Fort Worth FFF club was to include  several fly casting events in its' now canceled 1998 conclave with an open event for a ten thousand dollar prize and novice, amateur and team events for merchandise prizes. The competition was to be in a novel format combining accuracy and distance casts. Nine weight rods with weight forward nine weight lines were to be supplied by the various manufacturers exhibiting and the "fly" was to be a foam bodied, hookless pencil popper, 3/8" in diameter with a nine foot 2x leader.

Three thirty inch targets were to  be spaced at 35', 45' and 55' with the contestant given two false casts to place the popper in or near each target in order for two rounds, a total of six targets. Ten points  for a hit, eight points for landing within one foot of the target, six points for two feet and  four points for three feet. The distance event, with the same rod, was to be limited to a sixty foot back cast with two false casts before the best of three  scoring casts.   There was to be a ten point penalty for letting the line or popper hit the floor on the back cast.

The distance event was to have been scored with one point for each complete yard cast - ninety feet  is thirty points. The combination of  the accuracy scores and the distance scores makes the total score for the event.

The ten thousand dollar event would have been open to all who wish to pay the fifty dollar entry fee. The other men's, women's, novice, amateur and children's events, with merchandise prizes, were to have been free. Contestants could enter more than one event that they qualify for and there was to have been be a team of two casters event as well.

The combined accuracy and distance format is new to your correspondent and certainly forms an exciting and fast moving event with the limited false casting and the pencil popper fly.

This contest and the Florida sports show contest reported below in this page are the only prize money casting tournaments your correspondent knows of in many decades. One suspects it is the first one ever with a ten thousand dollar first prize. We don't know what the second prize would have been, if any. Just one more way to have fun with a fly rod.

SYLVANA, WASHINGTON FLY FISHING FAIR AND CASTING CHAMPIONSHIPS

MAY 2 AND 3, 1998

(results posted below)

Sylvana Washington is a small community about fifty miles north of Seattle which is hosting a fly fishing fair and casting contests the first weekend in May. There will be the Jim Green two handed casting tournament and some single handed accuracy events as well as casting demonstations and clinics by Steve Rajeff, many time world all round casting champion and other prominant and skilled practicioners of the art.

Saturday, May 2 will be devoted to practice with spey rods and single handed rods loaned by manufacturers with the casting competitions on Sunday. This will be a first ever spey casting competition on grass using a unique "grass line" consisting of ten feet of 30 pound leader with a blood knot every three inches. The ends of the leader segments will be left long so that the line will provide a "surface tension" on grass similar to the grip of the water used in spey casting.

The spey distance event will feature an overhead cast with the two handed rod and a single spey and a double spey. We understand the rods will be limited to sixteen feet in length and will throw fifteen weight shooting heads in the overhead aspect. The combined length of the three casts will determine the winners. A similar tournament in Clarkston, Washington, in 1997 produced a long overhead cast of 207' 9" by Steve Rajeff combined with his single spey (left bank) of 128'9" and double spey (right bank) of 123'2", all on water. Steve had the longest combined casts in the professional division and Stan Hendrickson won the non professional division with casts of 151' 2" overhead, 116' 3'' Left bank and 113 ' right bank.

The single handed event will be with a ten foot 7 wt rod to five circular targets spaced from 35 to 60 feet. The exact rules are not available at press time. (There is a well founded rumor that at the 1997 Clarkston tournament the targets were in the shape of wooden fishes and were moving . This year they will be stationary.)

Merchandise prizes will be awarded in the fisherman class - with kudos awarded to the professional casters who come to compete in that division.

The entry fee for the casting competition will be five dollars per event and contestants can use their own spey rods (no tournament type rods) in the spey events but will use the single handed rod provided by the sponsors for the singlehanded accuracy event. There may be a spey accuracy event as well.

The rest of the fly fishing fair will consist of merchandise offered by merchants and manufacturers, casting demonstrations and clinics by notable casting and fishing personalities, a silent auction, FOOD, and the necessary fish stories and exaggerated descriptions of past triumphs.

This fair is a benefit for the Volunteer Fire District 19 "JAWS OF LIFE" fund. The sponsors are the Silvana Community Association, Silvana Volunteer Fire Department 19, their auxiliary, the Cinder Ellas and members of the fly fishing community.

Admission is free but donations for the Jaws of Life fund would be welcome and appropriate. Silvana is close by the banks of one of the Puget Sound country's most distinguished fly fishing rivers, the Stillaguamish, and there are proven steel head bars within the very environs of Silvana. The fair will take place at Viking Hall in Silvana (it is impossible to miss Viking Hall if you find your way to Silvana) and more information can be obtained from Marlow at 360 652 9751 or 360 826 5221.

This is a good chance to see some world class casters in action and to get your feet wet in a genuine casting tournament with first class equipment on equal terms with other fishermen in the "fishermen" category.

1998 TOURNAMENT RESULTS

Jim and Carol Green and Marlow Bumpus wish to thank those fishers and community members who helped conduct this little seminar on spey technique. To the contestants in this grass experiment congratulations for doing your best in front of a crowd with something you had never seen before, a grass leader, and, many times, with a rod you had never met before. We hope and believe that the things learned from these two days of immersion in spey casting with friendly advice and competition will lead to more pleasure on the water and greater threats to the fish. Steve Rajeff and Al Buhr were diligent and generous with their demonstrations and casting tips. The spey rod can be your friend if you will let it.

FLORIDA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENTS ANNOUNCED

TWO CHAMPIONS WIN $2,000.00 APIECE. MERCHANDISE PRIZES FOR THE OTHERS

The winners of the $2,000.00 first prizes for the professional and amateur divisions of the Florida Sportsman's First Annual Florida State Casting Championships, at the Florida Sportsman's Fishing Show in Orlando were amateur Scott McCalla, a college student, of Tampa and pro Eric Bachnik of Largo. Mc Calla said his winnings were going straight into his college fund. Bachnik did not divulge his plans for the money but it will probably not be used for fishing lures. He is sales manager of L&S Bait Co., manufacturers of Mirrolures.

All finalists were winners of preliminary  events at at seven Florida Sportsman fishing shows held around the state in 1998. Numerous other plaques and merchandise prizes were awarded to winners in the various tackle categories. 850 casters participated and there were seven finalists in each category at the Orlando finals.

Net proceeds from the $2.00 entry fees were sent to the Coastal Conservation Association of Florida.

The finals for the grand prizes consisted of two stages. The first stage featured a target at 55 feet on a pond. The target had concentric rings of 3 feet, two feet, one foot and a cup in the center with scoring of twenty five to one hundred fifty points for landing in the various rings. Each contestant made two casts at the target with a spinning rod, bait casting rod and a fly rod, a total of six casts.

The second phase was a speed round with spinning and bait casting outfits. Each contestant had two minutes to cast as many times as desired to three targets at 40, 45 and 55 feet in order and then back to the 40 foot target and so forth. Five points was awarded for each target hit in the two minutes alloted to the spinning tackle and the additional two minutes with the revolving spool bait outfit.

Professional champion Eric Bachnik scored 100 points in the first phase and eleven hits, 55 points in the second phase, a total of 155 points. Amateur Scott McCalla scored 175 points for his prize.

Best you Floridians start practicing for next year.

The 1998 Florida State Sportsman Fishing Shows will, for the first time, feature fly, plug and spin casting contests with over $10,000.00 in cash and prizes awarded. The finals will be at the Florida Sportsman Fishing Show at Central Florida Fairgrounds, Orlando, October 17 & 18, 1998. The remaining preliminary contests, with prizes, will be at the following Shows:

Fort Myers April 18, 19, Lee Civic Center; Tampa, September 12,13, Florida State Fairgrounds; West Palm Beach, September 26, 27, South Florida Fairgrounds; Miami, October 3, 4, Dade County Youth Fairgrounds.

The format will involve professional and amateur divisions with three events. The two dollar entry fee net proceeds will go to the Florida Chapter of the Coastal Conservation Association.

Contestants will use tackle furnished by the sponsors and will have one practice cast and two scoring casts with spin and plug tackle. Fly casters will get two false casts and then a scoreing cast, then two false casts and a score. There will be five rings with point values from 25 to 150. Ties will go to the first high score posted with no tie breakers. Competitors may compete only once per day and in only one show.

THE EIGHTH ANNUAL COLORADO FLY CASTING OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP will be conducted in July, 1998 in Meadow Park in Lyons Colorado and on the St.Vrain .

1. This will be a one day event on an as yet to be announced weekend in July. The championship features a combination of catch and release fishing, accuracy target casting in fishing situations and distance competition. This contest is unique in that the fishing, target casting and distance competitions are all performed with the same rod, reel and line with a fly supplied by the committee. There are divisions for male, female and physically challenged participants. It is a fund raiser for stream conservation projects with a fifty entry limit. The prizes are cane rods and fishing tackle donated by merchants and craftsmen.

The 1997 male champions were: Bob Zuellig, Ft. Collins CO, first; Shannon Elliott, Westminster CO, second and Paul Deeter, Longmont CO, third. The female champions were Lee Ann Zuellig , Ft. Collins, first; Sharon Sweet, Boulder CO, second and Credith Neptune, Longmont CO, third. The physically challenged champion was Michael Dunn of Colorado Springs.

The distance competition featured a shoot out between Bob Zuellig, the winner with his three casts of 89'1", 106'3'' and 91'11', total 287'3'' and runner up Paul Deeter with casts of 105'5", 91'0" and 84'11", total 281'4". The record long cast in this tournament was by Frank Praznik, Fort Collins CO, in 1995 with 111'0". We have no information on the lines and rods used but will try to supply that with this year's results.

Information about the tournament can be obtained from Kurt Carlson, Parks and Recreation Director, Town of Lyons, Box 49, Lyons CO 80540. Phone 303 823 6622.

We will publish the date for the 1998 championships with more detail on the events. Lyons is about thirty miles northwest of Denver.
