Buttons And Lacey, The Good Manners Bears

And Their Pet Balblitzes

Storybook # 3

"Lacey Meets Buttons' Parents For The First Time"

Monday came with a smell of rain in the air. The leaves were falling as each gust of wind blew against the trees. (Gust means the sudden blowing of wind.) The new school year had just begun the Friday before and now it was time for all the little bears in Caveville, USA to begin to learn.

As you might remember from Storybook # 2, Saturday was a big day in the lives of Buttons and Lacey and their pet Balblitzes. They had learned an important lesson about disappointment that day. In other words, their day had not gone as they had planned, however, because they did not get mad about it, they were blessed by being with one another and meeting new friends as well.

For Lacey, today was another day to look forward to. She was going to meet Buttons’ family for the very first time after school. Lacey had never known anyone whose parents were divorced. (divorced means that two people, a man and a woman, are separated by the law and no longer live together.) She had never met a stepparent before either. She even wondered what they looked like. Buttons had told her about his parent’s divorce and that he sees his real father once every two weeks. Lacy remembered as Buttons was telling her about his parents, that he looked sad when he spoke about his real father and he told her how much he missed him. However, when Buttons talked about his stepfather, he would smile and acted like he really cared about him.

Lacey had told her parents about her visit with Buttons’ family today and promised that she would only be there for one hour. Before she was permitted to visit Buttons’ family she was to have all of her homework completed and her chores done. Lacey was taught that a person bear was always to make sure that their responsibilities were taken care of first before they thought about resting or having fun. (Responsibilities means those things in your life that are important to you such as: homework, cleaning your room, hanging up your clothing, keeping yourself clean and much more. Responsibilities can mean anything important, it mainly depends on the person and what kind of life they live.)

Lacey woke up to an alarm clock that her parents had given to her on Saturday so she would never be late for school. On the Friday before her mother awakened Lacey but knew that she needed to teach Lacey to be responsible for herself. Being on time for school was a new responsibility for Lacey and she knew that she had to get up out of bed as soon as she heard the alarm. The alarm was loud enough that even Pinkerie had heard it and she was sitting straight up in bed with her eyes wide, not realizing what all the noise was about.

.

Lacey could not help but giggle at Pinkerie because she looked funny at that moment. Pinkerie looked so shocked, Lacey thought she better explain why there was so much noise. She also explained that she would be leaving for school soon and that she would be back later just as she had done on Friday. Pinkerie looked sad when Lacey told her that, but she knew that Lacey had to go to school and there was nothing that could change that fact.

Lacey’s mother had gotten Pinkerie many picture books to look at while Lacey was at school. Because Pinkerie was learning the language that Lacey spoke, Lacey’s mother thought the picture books would help Pinkerie match the pictures to the words. Soon Lacey would be teaching Pinkerie so much more because Lacey, herself, would be learning many things while she was in school.

Meanwhile, Buttons was getting up out of bed also, but his alarm clock was not as loud as Lacey’s so Blueberie was not awakened by it. Quietly Buttons prepared for school and because his mother believed that children should have a healthy breakfast before going to school, Buttons ate well before going to the bus stop.

Although it looked as if it would be raining outside soon, fortunately the rain had not started yet. Buttons waited for the bus in front of his house and was glad that he would not be getting wet from the rain and was glad that he had remembered to bring his umbrella, just incase there was rain later.

The bus came not long after Buttons had gotten to the Bus Stop. He was so excited to see it because he was beginning to like going to school. Lacey had saved him a seat. When he sat down Lacey told him that Mr. Harry Bear, the bus driver, had told them to wear their seatbelts. Buttons was use to wearing seatbelts in a car and now he was buckling the belt there in the bus.

.

Mr. Harry Bear, the bus driver stood up as Buttons was buckling his seatbelt. He said, "My name is Mr. Harry Bear and I am your bus driver for the year. Now that it looks like the bus is full and there are no more stops to make, I need to tell you the rules for riding in my bus." By now I see that all of you have your seatbelts on.  I am glad to see that you will be safe if anything should happen. I want you to know that I do not allow anyone fighting nor do I allow anyone saying bad words."  (Allow means to let something to be done. In this case Mr. Harry Bear will not let them do certain things so he said that he will NOT allow.)

.

Mr. Harry Bear went on to say: "Also, I am responsible to make sure the bus stays clean and I am sure that you will show your respect to me and not leave paper nor anything in the seats or on the floor nor will you throw paper out the windows." (Respect means to treat someone or something well)  Mr. Harry Bear continued:  "As you should know by now, it is not a good thing to cause others to pick up messes that you make. Cleaning up after yourselves show others that you are responsible.

You will show everyone how smart you are by not letting yourselves become angry at another bear nor hitting another bear. As I told you, I will not allow any fighting or bad words. It takes a smart bear to not fight back when another bear is wanting you to fight. Fighting is not necessary in this world unless you are trying to protect your life or the lives of those you love. As far as bad words just remember this, I do not allow them and bad words spoken out loud are the showing of a lazy mind. I am sure there is no lazy minds on this bus, am I right?" With that question along with the big smile that Mr. Harry Bear had on his face, the little bears clapped their hands in agreement and began to giggle.

The school day went by quickly as Mrs. Brown Bear had begun to teach the little bears how to read. At one point in the day, Mr. Cary Bear came into the classroom. He was a very large black bear with a very nice blue suit on. He carried a flag with him as he walked through his school. He wanted the little bears to remember that they should always be proud of their school and one day many of them would be joining sport teams as the year went by.

Mrs. Brown Bear had told her classroom on the first day of school that when an adult came into the classroom, the little bears must always address them as Mr. or Mrs. or Ms.. When Mr. Cary Bear came into the classroom, she was proud of them all when they said, "Hello Mr. Cary Bear". Soon after he came to visit them, the school day came to a close.

The little bears were excited about being able to talk with all their new friends on the bus. Buttons and Lacey were excited because this was the day that Lacey was to meet Buttons’ parents for the first time. When Lacey got off the bus, Buttons waved good-bye to her and said that he would see her when she came to his house that evening.

Lola Bear and Pinkerie met Lacey at her front door. It had not rained at all that day, even though it looked like it was going to. Lacey was glad because she did not want to get wet and look messed up when she met Buttons’ parents later on that evening. Lacey and Pinkerie ran upstairs to their room so Lacey could study and do her homework. It was nice to have a pet like Pinkerie because she wanted to learn all that Lacey had learned that day so she could be smart as well.

Soon after Lacey had completed her homework and had finished with her chores, she and Pinkerie ate their dinners and prepared to go to Buttons’ house. Pinkerie was going with Lacey so she could visit with Blueberie, Buttons’ pet Balblitz. Lacey had made sure that she had asked Buttons if it would be alright for her to bring Pinkerie. Buttons told her that he would be happy to see Pinkerie again and he knew that Blueberie would be excited about it.

Lacey and Pinkerie arrived at Buttons house and by that time it was very dark outside. Before Lacey’s father left to go back to their house, he reminded Lacey not to walk outside in the dark by herself. What Lacey did not know was that her parents had come to Buttons house on Saturday to meet Buttons’ parents before they would allow their little girl bear to visit there. He told her about it and told her also that Buttons’ father was going to make sure that they stayed in the house. Lacey knew why and told Pinkerie it was because there was always bad people bears out at night and that was the time of day that the bad people bears would do things that were not kind and nice. Lacey understood and said "Yes Sir" to her father before he left.

Buttons and his parents met Lacey at the car so she and Pinkerie would not have to walk to the house by themselves. Lacey noticed how Buttons’ stepfather looked as normal as any other father bear she had ever seen. She tried not to let him think she was staring at him, so she only glanced at him from time to time. Lacey’s mother taught her that staring at someone was very rude. She also noticed that Pinkerie was giggling and sitting close to Blueberie on the floor as they seemed to be in a world all their own.

Meanwhile Buttons’ parents tried to make Lacey comfortable in their home by offering her a glass of water and some cookies. Buttons was behaving very well by not interrupting the conversation that his parents and Lacey were having. (Interrupting means in this case, to stop someone from talking without letting them finish what they are saying.)

When Lacey and Buttons’ parents had finished what they were saying to one another, Buttons added what he had to say about their conversation regarding little children bears that did not mind their parents or teachers. (Conversation is to talk about the same thing with other people.)

Buttons parents were saying how proud they were that Buttons had such good manners and had chosen good friends to be with. Buttons added: "There is a little boy bear on the bus named, Berry Bear. I heard him talking to another boy bear on the bus today and what he was saying was not very nice." Buttons went on to say: " He was telling the other boy bear that he did not like the bus driver, Mr. Harry Bear. He said that he was not going to mind the bus driver’s rules because he didn’t want to. He also said that he never minds what his parents say either, so why should he mind an old man bus driver and and an old lady teacher."

.

When Buttons finished saying what he was saying to his parents and Lacey, his stepfather spoke: "That is very sad to know Buttons. Berry bear will soon learn that he cannot get along well in his life without minding rules. He will learn that he will be in constant trouble and when he is older, he might end up being in jail. He will also learn that people bears will not hire him so he can make money either. When you see this boy bear on the bus or in school, you need to be nice to him, but do not walk around with him nor join him in anything he wants to do." Buttons and Lacey were sitting there listening to every word that Buttons’ stepfather was telling them. Blueberie and Pinkerie had even stopped what they were talking about to hear what he had to say as well.

Buttons stepfather continued to speak about Berry Bear: "This little boy bear has a bad attitude about life itself." (Attitude means in this case, to speak or act in a way that you show the lack of respect to others and possibly hatefulness against something or someone.) Buttons father went on to say: "If you are with someone who acts this way and they do something bad, then when they are caught and punished you are caught and punished also. It is called: "Guilt by Association". You could have been perfectly good and not joined in what he had done which was bad, but because you were with him, you are considered to be just as quilty. So again I tell you that it is not good to be around those who do not follow the rules and act badly."

The room was silent for a moment when Buttons’ stepfather finished saying what he had to say about Berry Bear. Buttons then told his stepfather that he was not going to be friends with Berry Bear and if Berry Bear spoke to him, he would be nice and speak back but he would not be around him because he felt like Berry Bear was soon going to be in trouble anyway. Lacey also agreed with Buttons and then they noticed that Buttons stepfather was looking at his watch. His stepfather then said: "We have really enjoyed your visit with us Lacey and Pinkerie, but I think you need to call your father and ask him to come to pick you up because he had told me that you were only to be here for one hour. The hour has gone by pretty fast and we would like for you to come to see us again and maybe you can stay longer the next time."

With that, Lacey did call her father and when her father came to pick her up, he went to their front door rang the door bell. He wanted to make sure that Lacey and Pinkerie did not walk out to the car alone. Lacey and Pinkerie were all smiles by the time they got into the car. Lacey told her father about everything that was said and he smiled and told her that he agreed with Buttons’ stepfather. He also thanked her for telling him and he went on to tell Lacey that when other adults tell you something like that, it is always good for you to tell your mother or myself what they said. When you do that, we can then tell you whether or not it is a good thing for you to know at your age. If Buttons’ stepfather had told you something that we did not agree with, then we would tell you not to remember what he said and we would explain why you shouldn’t."
