Second Annual (41 Hour) Dead Zone Marathon!

Check out Shadowdog's Films:

Hours 20-24

Ground Rules

1) Start marathon at 6am EST on June 11th. Finish marathon (All episodes from Seasons 1, 2, and 3) by 10pm EST on June 12th, just in time for the premiere episode of Season 4! Finish by watching that episode.

2) Watch at least one episode per hour, meaning I can take no longer a break than 15 minutes per hour.

3) Post at least one episode commentary at the top of each hour. Also post regularly at Official Dead Zone board to prove I am still awake.

4) Diet Pepsi amounts are marathon totals, not per hour.

5) Because I've already marathoned Seasons 1 and 2, those seasons will be viewed this time with audio commentaries on.

Episode Commentary Key:

Visions:
Prolonged marathons tend to cause hallucinations - er - visions.

Grouch of the EP award: There are some GROUCHY people in this series! Who was the surliest person in this ep?

General Remarks: What I thought of the ep, in general.

Commentators: Who commented on this episode? (where applicable)

Commentary Highlights: Again, where applicable.

Funny line of the ep/commentary: TEE HEE!
Trivia Question: Every now and then I'll ask a trivia question. Be the first to answer!

2.8 "Cabin Pressure"

Ounces of Diet Pepsi: 84
Visions: I was visited by several Disney voices this hour, I don't know why.

Grouch of the EP award: The Captain (with patronizing grin): "Mr. Ghent asked me to convey his apologies for the discomfort you've suffered. As a token of our sincere regret you will be receiving a free milage upgrade coupon for future travel with Trans-Colony." Wonderful help that will be when Johnny's DEAD!

General Remarks: This episode comes across like an episode of "24" since it is real time. That added a level of excitement on top of an already exciting script. The Captain and Air Marshall characters were wonderful, as were their character arcs.

Commentators: David Ogden Stiers and Robert Chynoweth (there was a second track and I love all four people on it from previous commentaries but there was no way in HELL I was not listening to every golden word coming out of David's mouth!

Commentary Highlights: I swear, I could listen to David read the phone book. "Anthony Michael Hall ... I don't know what is up with this three name stuff!" - David, being cute.
David is the first person I've heard on these commentaries who actually pauses and considers a question put before him before answering. His measured answer to the question about defending Johnny as a psychic was especially interesting.

Funny line of the ep/commentary: "All the same? You booked me to speak after Alan Greenspan." - Johnny
"Alan has been an old and dear friend to Faith Heritage. Be sure to shake his hand, will you? It would be nice to know if the Fed will be lowering the interest rate." - Purdy
Johnny looks shocked.
"Kidding. I'm kidding." - Purdy

2.9 "The Man Who Never Was"

Ounces of Diet Pepsi: 84
Visions: For me, it wasn't my body disappearing, it was my brain. What have I gotten myself into???

Grouch of the EP award: Grissom. He was crotchety, wasn't he? Sheesh!

General Remarks: Nice "X-Files" references early on, considering the type of episode this was. There were some unique visuals and yet another story with a lot of heart. The kid Secret Agent is laugh out loud funny every time I watch this!

Commentators: Anthony Michael Hall and Robert Culp

Commentary Highlights: Robert Culp's a talkative guy for his age and made this another fine commentary. Robert had a lot of good and interesting advice about acting. I'm convinced that any up and coming actor would be well served by listening to these DZ commentaries. There is a lot of good stuff here!

Funny line of the ep/commentary: "You ain't seen nothing yet, kid." Johnny pauses, the to the 'mother' "If she really is a kid."

2.10 "Dead Men Tell Tales"

Ounces of Diet Pepsi: 90
Visions: Am I in the darkness or is the darkness in me?

Grouch of the EP award: Walt. Is it just me or is he superbitchy this episode? "You swear on JJ's life that you're not lying to me?" What kind of >:-# is THAT? That's the most cold blooded thing Walt has ever said to Johnny!

General Remarks: Still don't buy that always dangerous Maine Mob. Please! And I've never been a big fan of episodes that start near the end of the story and then are told in flashback. For me, this takes a lot of the tension out. If someone is telling the story of what you are watching, they are alive, well, and (usually) in safe hands.
Having said all that, this is still a pretty fun episode ... especially when Sonny gets his butt kicked.

Commentators: Robert Petrovicz and Lloyd Segan

Commentary Highlights: Again, Lloyd asks good questions to get at technical issues that you wouldn't ordinarily hear on a commentary. For instance, we get to find out what a tow shot is! (Hint: It has nothing to do with feet!) There was also interesting talk of sight lines and "poor man's process" again.
"These are specially rigged slot machines - not unlike Vegas - where you can not win." - Robert

Funny line of the ep/commentary: "What the hell are you doing in a limo with a hooker in a funeral procession for a mob guy?" - Walt

2.11 "Playing God"

Ounces of Diet Pepsi: 96
Visions: I can't take it anymore, I HAVE to leapfrog that unicorn! WOO HOO!!!

Grouch of the EP award: Jason What an embittered snipkins!

General Remarks: What a great concept for an episode! It was awesome to see Johnny "lose" for once. I feel like it was necessary for this to happen at this point in the series. Much longer without an episode like this and the audience wouldn't believe the drama and suspense because Johnny always wins. So this was a breath of fresh air. Purdy was especially awesome in this episode.

Commentators: Anthony Michael Hall and Ally Sheedy

Commentary Highlights: Knowing that AMH and Ally have a history together, you knew this was going to be a fun commentary and it was. What I wasn't expecting was all that profanity! Wow those two have foul mouths! More amusing was their "Breakfast Club" remarks.
"Emilo is kicking somebody's ass. What was that story about?" - AMH

Funny line of the ep/commentary: "In 'High Art' were you really naked with that chick?" - AMH
"I was, okay? Let's get back to the show." - Ally

2.12 "Zion"

Ounces of Diet Pepsi: 96
Visions: I saw you ... walking in the rain! No, wait, that was a song. I'm okay.

Grouch of the EP award: Bruce's father is GROUCH-chey! Whew!

General Remarks: They mention in the commentary that John Adams attracted network attention with his performance in this episode. It's about time, because John Adams isn't just a good actor. He isn't just a good supporting actor. John Adams is a FORCE. He could lead any show on the planet. He has the intensity, charisma, and work ethic (not to mention intelligence) to do it.
Getting back to this episode, Parallel Johnny was an interesting nod to the novel and shooting Stillson and was the producers way of declaring to the fans that we were not going to walk that same road when the Armageddon storyline concludes.

Commentators: Anthony Michael Hall, Louis Gosset Jr, and Lloyd Segan

Commentary Highlights: Lou Gossett Jr is just another in a long string of fantastic guest stars to do fascinating commentaries. Whether he was talking about his start in acting or his personal approach or what led to the creation of his character, Lou was riveting. Lloyd was great as always getting the other commentators (especially Lou) engaged. I really believe that Lloyd could be a talk show host. Lou's "action" anecdote was very funny.

Funny line of the ep/commentary: "I guess he didn't have the right therapeutic people working with him." - Bruce, talking sole credit for Johnny's full recovery in his own timeline.
