Descriptive Data Capture

Overview

Today, when office workers send each other data over the net, they most likely will send it as an attached spreadsheet or word-processing document. That works fine when both run the same software and nothing needs to be changed by the receiver before the data is used, or the volume is so small that cutting and pasting is not a problem.

Capture addresses the needs of those who do not run the same software or changes to incoming documents are needed and the volume is too high to cut and paste. Capture lets you send the basic facts over the net as plain ASCII and makes that text as meaningful and as easy to use a spreadsheet or word-processing document. The author of the electronic mail makes the text meaningful by describing it. The program uses that description to create the type of document the receiver of the e-mail needs.

The authors description of his document becomes a contract that makes electronic data interchange possible. By agreeing on how they will describe documents, partners can pass any type of text based information. They can add new types of documents and they can revise documents without changing software.
