    Be sure to check the most recent (1980's) edition. Contains bibliographic data on published unit books for either side. New books are published frequently so there may be material available about the unit you seek that is not in this book.

  3. Federal Publishing Company, The Union Army, Federal Publishing Company, Madison, Wis., 1908, Volume II - New York, Maryland, West Virginia and Ohio. The second volume of this multi-volume set contains capsule histories of all Maryland Union regiments.
  4. Frederick H. Dyer, A Compendium of the War of the Rebellion, The Dyer Publishing Company, Des Moines, 1908

  6. Janet B. Hewett, ed., The Roster of Union Soldiers 1861-1865, and U.S.C.T., Broadfoot Publishing Company, Wilmington, N.C. The multi-volume Roster contains an alpahbetical listing of all Union soldiers and an additonal two volumes contain an alpahbetical listing of the U.S.C.T. Both works are very useful for searching family history or indentifying inscribed artifacts.
  7. Harold Manakee, The Civil War in Maryland , Baltimore, Maryland Historical Society, 1961.

    Contains capsule histories of all Maryland units and an overview of the state's participation in the Civil War on both sides.

  8. State Commissioners,The History and Roster of Maryland Veterans, War of 1861-1865 2 Vols., Guggenheimer, Weil and Company, Baltimore, 1898.

    This book contains capsule histories of all Maryland Union units (including the 4th,7th,9th, 19th, 30th, & 39th U.S.C.T.) as well as rosters for them. The histories are short (2-4 pages), but they provide info about battles, army corps, commanders, casualties, etc.

  9. Daniel Carroll Toomey and Charles Albert Earp, Marylanders in Blue: The Artillery and the Cavalry, Toomey Press, Baltimore, 1999.

    This book contains a history of all of the units mentioned in its title. The unit provide much more detail than the sources listed above and are in a narrative format. Lots of illustrations. -- A must have if you are interested in this topic.

  10. The Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies in the War of the Rebellion. 128 Volumes. Washington, 1882-1900

    You may find reports from Maryland unit commanders, casualty reports, and mentions in other officers reports, orders of battles, and more.
