Once Upon a Summertime
|
|
I found a ledger from the past,
penned in a girlish hand.
Her thoughts called me, and for awhile
I shared her wonderland.
"Spring melted into Summer sun,
hot gravel curled the toes
of pigtailed girls who waved balloons
to tease their barefoot beaus.
Up and down old rambling roads,
Trees whispered sweet desire.
Folks would creak the front porch swing...
while kids caught flies of fire.
Summer concerts in the park
lured neighbors by the hand.
Even Robin Redbreast sang Alexander's ragtime band.
As evening doused the final notes,
each Family drifted back...
to Home---and sometimes apple pie
just cooling on the rack.
The midnight blue of Summer's night
fell softly as a kiss...
on Baby's cheek and Sweetheart's lips...
on an evening, such as this."
Dear Girl of olde, your days' not done...
though silver frames your face.
Your youthful Spirit catches fire
with words Time won't erase.
with "thank you's" to my dear Gram, who gave me
so many of these "images" of her own past...
I love you and miss you always~
