I have helped organizations more efficiently and effectively communicate with their
users. Here are some examples:
- A sales training course that included self-study and classroom modules, and resulted in
sales exceeding largest by 400 percent
- A system troubleshooting guide that simplified complex procedures so that typical system
operators could perform them--and ultimately, reduce service costs
- A redesign of an organizational reporting system that led to shorter, improved status
and a 25 percent reduction in meeting time
- A heuristic review of an online medical school.

Different design projects require different types of assistance. Ultimately, services
are tailored to your needs. But here are three common frameworks for a working
relationship:
- Serve as creative director for a project. In this role, I would
prepare high-level and detailed designs for you.
- High level design includes (1) a description of the design request, which addresses the
need underlying the request, a list of project issues and constraints, observable and
mesurable goals, and a detailed evaluation plan. (2) A blueprint for the project, which
describes the form of the communication product; expectations of users; an information
map, a sample section; editorial, authoring, viewing, project guidelines; and a schedule
and budget for the project.
- A detailed design includes all of the above, as well as a storyboard or detailed
description of each section of the communication product
Typically, I do not develop communication products that I design. Instead, I usually
work with other technical communicators and course developers. I review their work
throughout the project to make sure that it conforms to the specifications.
- Conduct an expert review according to research-based criteria and
extensive, practical experience.
- Lead a seminar, in which your staff not only develops design skills, but also
makes signficiant progress on the design of a current project. For a list of seminars and
speeches available,
