J. C. Bailard is a native son of Carpinteria and is the scion of one of the old pioneer families of this locality, his paternal grandfather having crossed the plains in an early day, with ox team and covered wagon. Members of the family have done their full part in the development and upbuilding of the county and J. C. Bailard has gained an enviable place in the business circles of this locality, conducting a large grocery store in Carpinteria. He was born on his father's ranch near this city, on the 5th day of June, 1893, and is a son of John W. and Kittie (Cravens) Bailard.
The father was born in the northern part of California and was brought to Carpinteria when about four years of age by his parents, who were early settlers in this state. Here he was on the old home ranch and at Carpinteria. He was also a member of the board of directors of the Commercial National Bank of Santa Barbara. His death occurred in 1921. He was a public spirited citizen, taking a deep interest in the welfare of the community, and served eight years as a member of the county board of supervisors. He was a strong advocate of improved roads and stood for all that was best in community life. His widow is still living on the home ranch. To this worthy couple were born three children. Mrs. Donald Saxby, Mrs. Pearl Daggs and J. C. The old home ranch is still in possession of the family and is largely devoted to the growing of walnuts and beans.
J. C. Bailard attended the district schools and the Santa Barbara high school and later bought the Webb grocery store store in Carpinteria, which he has been conducting for the past twelve years. This was an old-established business here and, under Mr. Bailard's capable management, the trade has continued to increase in volume, so that he mow has one of the leading stores of this locality. He carries a large and complete line of staple and fancy groceries and those who have dealt with him have found him a courteous,accommodating and thoroughly reliable merchant.
Mr. Bailard was united in marriage to Miss Effie Warren, who is a native of El Paso, Texas, and they are the parents of two children. Jean Warren and Josgne. Mr. Bailard is a member of Santa Barbara Lodge, No. 613 Benevolent Protective Order of Elks. He has always shown a disposition to cooperate with his fellowmen in efforts for the improvement of the town and county and is regarded as one of the enterprising and wide-awake citizens of Carpinteria.
