Q&A for Polarized Stereo Projection

Q. Can I use the red/blue (anaglyph) glasses for stereo projection?

A. Do not confuse the anaglyph (red/blue) with the polarized glasses sold here.  You need the anaglyph glasses for images displayed in the internet.  But for stereo projection on a screen using a stereo projector (or twin 2d projectors) like the TDC, Compco Triad, Nord, and others, you need the polarized glasses shown here.  The lenses are gray.

Q. How does polarized stereo projection work?

A. In polarized stereo projection both Right and Left images are projected superimposed on the screen.  There is a pair of polarizing filters inside the projection which polarizes each image in different directions.  When the images are projected on a metallic screen (sometimes called silver or lenticular), the reflected images retain the polarization.  The filters in the glasses shown here are oriented so that the right image is only transmitted through the right lens and blocked by the left, and the left image is transmitted through the left lens and blocked from the right.  As a result the right eye sees the right image and  the left eye sees the left image.  Note that you do need a silver screen because white cloth or beaded screens depolarize the light.
