As some of you know, I shoot more than 100 rolls of slide film (all stereo!) a year and I cut and mount all my slides in standard stereo mounts. Considering how much time I spend cutting and mounting stereo slides, you would expect that I use a fancy film cutter. In reality I use the simple & inexpensive cutter that you see here. Here is why:
It is relatively compact, lightweight, easy to set, easy to pack and travel, use in airports, etc.
It works by friction and not film perforations. This way I can cut a variety of stereo formats. I use just about everything from Realist, to RBT, full-frame, to ISO Duplex, and only need one cutter. This one!
The two large windows at the bottom allow me to place the cutter over a light box to see where exactly I am cutting. I always use a light box to set the stereo window by freeviewing. (Note: I am showing the cutter over a light box in the picture below- I sell a light box in my ebay store). I like the fact that the cutter is simple and does *not* have internal illumination.
The film-advance friction mechanism works very well and the cutting blade cuts my film straight and accurately. (Note: with time the friction might be reduced... I find it easier and just push the film through the cutter... I am wearing a glove in my right hand for this purpose)
I liked this cutter so much that I now stock it and recommend it to fellow stereo enthusiasts. If you are working with more than one format, then this cutter is what you need!
