Use:
Pricking Wheels: Are used to mark the locations to stab the awl into the leather when hand stitching leather parts together. The numbers on the tool typically indicate the number of stitches per inch.
Overstitch Wheels: Perform the same function as a marking wheel, however it is shaped to also create a false stitch impression. It is also said to be used to be used to roll over the top of hand stitching to even out the threads, hence the name overstitch wheel.
In the above pictures the overstitch wheel is on the left and the pricking wheel on the right. The overstitch wheels points are created with rounded surfaces and the pricking wheels are triangular in shape.

- Reprint of "Henry G. Gomph & Co. Fine Harness Tools" catalogue lists this tool as a No. 016 Pricking Wheels, in Stationary Handles. They were avalible in sizes 4 to 22.
- Overstitch wheels clearly marked "GOMPH" numbers "5", "6" and "7".
- Reprint of "Henry G. Gomph & Co. Fine Harness Tools" catalogue lists this tool as a No. 017 Overstitch Wheels, in Stationary Handles. They were avalible in sizes 4 to 16.
- These three tools where purchased as a part of a saddle and harness makers tool chest, said to belong to the Sawyer Brothers of Liberty, PA between 1905-1923.
Toolmaker: H. F. Osborne Co., "Osborne Patent Tools"
- Overstitch wheel clearly marked "TRADE OPT MARK", "H.F. OSBORNE" number "12".
- An 1891 H.F. Osborne catalogue, lists this tool as a "816 -- Wheels, Overstitch, Stationary". It also was avalible in sizes from 4 to 22 stitches per inch.
Toolmaker: C.S. Osborne & Co.
- Clearly marked "C.S.OSBORNE & CO." number 16 overstitch wheel.
- Clearly marked "C.S.OSBORNE & CO.", "EST'D 1826" numbers 5, 6, 8, 10 and 12 overstitch wheels.
- A late 1880's vintage C.S. Osborne catalogue lists this tool as a, No. 40. Stationary Finishing (Overstitch) Wheels, Octagon Carriage. Regular or Thin. Sizes 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12.
- Clearly marked "C.S.OSBORNE & CO.", "EST'D 1826" number 7 pricking wheel.
- A late 1880's vintage C.S. Osborne catalogue lists this tool as a, No. 35. Stationary Pricking Wheels, made in sizes 5 to 12.
