Use:
A French edge tool is a flat cutting tool. It is used as skiving tool for tight areas. It is also used to cut 45 deg miters.
Toolmaker: Henry G. Gomph & Co.
- Clearly marked "GOMPH" numbers "2" and "5".
- Reprint of "Henry G. Gomph & Co. Fine Harness Tools" catalogue lists these tools as No. 044 French Edgers. They were avalible in sizes 0 to 8.
- These three tools where purchased as a part of a saddle and harness makers tool chest, said to belong to the Sawyer Brothers of Liberty, PA between 1905-1923.
Toolmaker: C.S. Osborne & Co.
- Clearly marked "C.S.OSBORNE & CO. NEWARK, N.J." Number "1/8".
- A late 1880's vintage C.S. Osborne catalogue lists this tool as a, No. 135. Saddlers' Carving Tools, Sizes 1/16", 1/8", 3/16" 1/4", 5/16", 3/8", 7/16", 1/2".
Toolmaker: H. F. Osborne Co., "Osborne Patent Tools"
- Clearly marked "H. F. OSBORNE" with "TRADE OPT MARK", Number 2.
- An 1891 H.F. Osborne catalogue, lists this tool as a "785 -- Tools, French Edge, Octagon".
- The 1891 catalogue lists the sizes in 1/16" increments between 1/16" and 1/2". This tools width is 1/8".
