Postage Rates of Portuguese India

1883

Prior to 1892, postal cards, which first appeared in India in May 1883, were rated at 3 reis or 1/4 tanga within the colony or to British India, and 1 tanga to Portugal & Colonies and Europe.

1892 Endnote

. . . The Provincial Portaria of March 6, 1885 fixed the rupia, worth 192 reis of Goa, at 400 Portuguese reis, thus 1 tanga equaled 25 reis. This was the postage paid in India to send a postal card to Portugal, while 10 reis carried a card from the Kingdom to India.

. . . It might be presumed that postal cards of 4½ reis, made (or altered) in India, might have circulated. . . . Up to now we’ve neither seen any nor found any reference to their existence.

. . . published in B[oletim]. O[fficial]. №84 of July 30, 1892 . . . new tables of postage applicable to mail dispatched from Portuguese India.
