Advanced Novell Network Management: NetWare 6

Chapter 12: Troubleshoot a NetWare 6 Network

Objectives:

This chapter discusses troubleshooting general network problems. The objectives are:

  1. Create a Disaster Recovery Plan
  2. Troubleshoot Network Problems
Concepts:
Create a Disaster Recovery Plan

A disaster recovery plan is created with the knowledge that data disasters will eventually happen. Plans should be made for each kind of disaster that can be foreseen.

  • Hardware failures can be planned for, first by obtaining spare parts and components, such as hard drives and network cards. If it is possible to have one, a spare server can be very valuable.
  • When failures happen, backup tapes will allow you to place your network back in order, if they are made on a regular basis. Your backup strategy is most important the moment it is needed.
  • Designing and using a RAID solution for fault tolerance will add protection to your data. Obviously, a level 0 RAID will not provide any protection.
  • Clusters add further protection against failures. The theory behind a cluster is to maintain services in spite of equipment failure.

More advice is offered about measures to help survive the loss of equipment and data:

  • Backups can be flawed, so the text advises making two backups each time backups are created. This gives you two chances to make a good copy, as well as the opportunity to store one copy off site. Off site storage is recommended to avoid losing your systems and your backups to fire, flood, or other disaster.
  • Especially vital data may justify the expense of off site servers. Wide data connections to off site servers can provide live copies at all times.
Troubleshoot Network Problems

The second objective is not addressed with any new information. It is merely an opportunity to practice diagnosing problems.
