Chassis Design

I originally thought I would build a Coupe replica with a more modern double a-arm suspension. But I have reconsidered and am now trying to replicate the original cars as much as possible. The old buggy spring suspension grows on you after a while.

Just for reference, this is a photo of the prototype Coupe chassis being assembled in the Shelby shop. The car was built around  a 289 Cobra frame from a car that was wrecked while racing.

This sketch illustrates how much structure (in green) was added to the original 289 Cobra frame. Since the 289 chassis was a ladder-style construction using 3" diameter tubes about 18" apart, torsional stiffness was lacking. The backbone structure helped keep all four wheels in contact with the road while cornering.

This isometric view shows the basic layout of what I have been designing on CAD. For those interested in computer-aided design, I am using SolidWorks.

The  chassis will be  identical to the original, including the  transverse leaf spring suspension front and rear.
