Abstract Initially founded as a special interest group consisting of government and industry people promoting the use of finite element and related technologies in Europe, the National Agency for Finite Element Methods and Standards (NAFEMS) has come to America's shores. At its conception, NAFEMS helped develop standards and quality control rules against which the growing number of FED-based stress analysis tools could be tested. The world's FE technology developers quickly adopted these tests as part of their process for verifying the accuracy of their codes. Today, most of the world's FE vendors routinely use NAFEMS benchmarks as part of their quality control process and publish the results in various manuals. XX
