Abstract What makes design engineers reluctant to use 3-D CAD and what industry can do to help smooth the transition from 2-D to 3-D CAD? Chuck Mathews, DP Technology: For the older engineers who were trained on 2-D, a change to 3-D seems to mean throwing out their existing knowledge. Other designers fear the unknown and learning a whole new technology that could endanger their livelihood. Terry Wohlers, Wohlers Associates: Some engineers are reluctant to use 3-D CAD software for several reasons. First, it's more difficult to learn and use, compared to software for drafting. Second, many drafting and design professionals have been trained to document designs in 2-D. The increased popularity of downstream applications, such as rapid prototyping, finite analysis and tool design, are encouraging companies to use CAD solid modeling. Ken Crow, The Society of Concurrent Product Development: The reasons I see are: paper-based paradigm, complexity of use and investment/training. XX
