Abstract Rapid feedback on how modifications to wall thickness, gate locations and other typical changes can affect overall part design and save designers time and money. As CAD continues taking on broader roles in product development, it has become important for files to flow more smoothly downstream to other applications. Each step of the designing, prototyping and tooling processes must now be integrated via the software and today several software suppliers have picked up the standard and begun consolidating their product's various functions. Moldflow (Lexington, MA) - a supplier of software solutions for the design and manufacture of injection molded plastic parts - is one such company that has recently combined several of its software analysis functions to create Part Adviser 5.0, a mold filling simulation program that allows designers to determine whether certain molded parts can be made more efficiently. The program also provides a materials database representing more than 225 resin manufacturers. I t also provides information on the location of weld lines and air traps, filling patterns, and pressure and temperature distributions within the part cavity. The program gives design results and "advice" to the user, is CAD friendly and is 3-D solids based. XX
