Abstract In light of the current economic downturn, companies are being forced to perform faster, cheaper and better. Lean manufacturing concepts are the biggest driving forces in industry today. For every manufacturer going "lean," however, there are thousands that still have not. These companies need to understand that the practice of lean manufacturing has become so critically important that many industries - especially automakers - are making it a requirement of their vendors. What Does Lean Really Mean? Lean companies produce with as few people, as little inventory and as little waste as possible. They ensure that each production stage processes exactly "what," "how much" and "when" the next stage wants it, and allow enormous variety in products without the kind of changeover costs that customized mass manufacturing involves. A Lean philosophy embraces every facet of the organization - sourcing, manufacturing, marketing, accounting and strategic planning. XX
