Abstract In order to manufacture functionally gradient meterial objects, a CAD model is required that contains both geometry and material information. This paper presented an approach to model and represent functionally gradient material objects by integrating the material information along with the geometry/ topology information based on STEP solid model. The user selects a reference feature and specifies material distribution functions in terms of distance functions. Thus the material information can be incorporated with the geometry information by attaching material distribution functions to reference feature entities as their properties. The material compositions of query points into the contour can also evaluated by computing the distances from query points to the reference feature in slicing functionally gradient material objects.
